New Delhi, India โ Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has reiterated India's steadfast commitment to negotiating trade deals on its own terms, prioritising national interest over any imposed deadlines. His statements, made on Friday, July 4, 2025, underscore India's strategic approach to global trade amidst ongoing discussions with several major economies and trading blocs.
Focus on National Interest, Not Deadlines
Minister Goyal explicitly stated that India "never negotiates trade deals with a deadline but national interest in mind." This assertion is particularly pertinent given the looming July 9 deadline for the US to implement reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods. Goyal stressed that any agreement with the US would only be announced when it is "fully finalised, properly concluded and in the national interest." India is seeking to protect its sensitive agricultural and dairy sectors in these negotiations, aiming for concessions in labour-intensive areas such as textiles, leather, and auto parts.
Ongoing Trade Negotiations
India is currently engaged in discussions for Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs) with a diverse range of partners:
- United States (US): Negotiations for an interim trade pact are in their final stages, with an Indian negotiating team recently returning from Washington. A broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) is anticipated by October 2025, with an ambitious target to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.
- European Union (EU): India and the EU are aiming for an early harvest deal by July 2025, with accelerated negotiations. The goal is to conclude a comprehensive FTA by the end of 2025.
- Oman: Discussions for a CEPA are progressing well, with Minister Goyal indicating that "good news" on the Oman FTA is expected soon. This agreement is seen as strategically important for deepening trade ties in West Asia.
- New Zealand: The first round of FTA negotiations successfully concluded in May 2025, with the second round scheduled for July 2025. Both nations aim to finalise the agreement by the end of the year to enhance economic cooperation.
- Chile and Peru: India is also actively engaged in trade talks with Chile and Peru, as part of its broader strategy to expand its global trade footprint.
Win-Win Approach for Developed World
Minister Goyal underscored that "An FTA Should Be A Win-Win, In National Interest" for both sides. He reaffirmed that "India Always Ready For A Fair Trade Deal With The Developed World," provided it safeguards the nation's interests.
No Immediate Plans for Washington Visit
Regarding a potential visit to Washington D.C. for trade talks, Goyal clarified that he has "No Plans For Now To Visit Washington DC." This decision is influenced by the upcoming Parliament session, indicating the government's focus on domestic legislative priorities.
