NSE CEO Ashishkumar Chauhan Confirms Robust Anchor Demand Ahead of ₹22,562-Crore IPO

Ahead of the launch of India's premier bourse's public debut, National Stock Exchange (NSE) Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ashishkumar Chauhan confirmed that institutional interest in the exchange's anchor book has proven exceptionally robust. Institutional appetite has comfortably outstripped the quota of shares available for allotment, even after the exchange rationalised the size of the anchor placement.

Speaking to media ahead of the bidding window, Chauhan indicated that an extensive lineup of domestic and foreign institutional investors has shown interest in purchasing bulk allotments. "The demand is unexpectedly large," Chauhan stated. "A large number of investors want to acquire a large number of shares. But we have only a limited number of shares to distribute."

Restructured Anchor Allocation and Strong Appetite

The size of the anchor book—initially projected at approximately ₹9,000 crore—was revised to between ₹6,000 crore and ₹6,250 crore. Despite the reduction, the quantum of bids received from mutual funds, domestic financial institutions, and foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) has far surpassed the available pool.

Final anchor allocations will be determined across designated regulatory categories under the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) guidelines, balancing domestic asset managers and foreign institutions ahead of the retail and high-net-worth individual (HNI) subscription window.

Key IPO Details

The benchmark bourse's public issue is set to open for anchor bidding on September 16, followed by the public subscription phase running from September 17 to September 21.

Key Details of the NSE Issue:

  • Price Band: The price range has been established at ₹1,700 to ₹1,785 per equity share.
  • Issue Size: At the upper price band, the offering aggregates to approximately ₹22,562 crore, making it one of the largest public offerings in the history of Indian capital markets.
  • Offer Structure: The issue comprises an Offer for Sale (OFS) of 12.64 crore equity shares by existing shareholders. The exchange itself will not receive any capital proceeds from the offering.
  • Implied Valuation: At the upper end of the price band, NSE is valued at up to approximately ₹4.42 lakh crore.

Operational Scale and Market Environment

Under Chauhan's leadership, the exchange has emphasised its technological resilience and long-term scalability. From handling roughly 700 trades a day during its early inception in 1994, the exchange now processes around 30 crore (300 million) trades and peaks at nearly 2,200 crore orders in a single standard 6-hour-and-15-minute trading session.

While addressing the primary issue, Chauhan also highlighted near-term market trends, observing that trading turnover has witnessed phases of consolidation in recent years amid sideways indices and shifting global geopolitical currents. Nonetheless, market participants view the strong anchor reception as an emphatic vote of institutional confidence in India's financial infrastructure and the dominant marketplace for equity and derivatives trading.
