How is each stock's contribution to the Nifty calculated?
The Nifty 50 is free-float market-cap weighted. A stock's contribution in index points ≈ previous index close × its weight × its % price change. HDFC Bank moving 1% swings the index about five times more than a 1% move in its smallest constituent.
How often does this heatmap update?
Every 5 minutes while the market is open (9:20 am to 3:50 pm IST), from NSE's live prices, then again with the final close (~17:15 IST). Constituent weights refresh twice a day from NSE free-float market cap.
Why do the estimated and actual index moves differ slightly?
Weights are point-in-time free-float shares and prices are sampled closes, so the weighted sum reconstructs the index move closely but not exactly — differences of a few points are normal.
Methodology: weights are each constituent's share of total free-float market capitalisation (NSE data, refreshed twice daily). Contribution in points ≈ previous index close × weight × day's % change, so contributions sum approximately — not exactly — to the index move. Auto-generated market data, not investment advice.
