⚠️ Disclaimer: This is AI-assisted information for education and return preparation — not tax, legal or investment advice. Figures are extracted and computed by an AI model and can contain errors; the slab arithmetic is re-checked by our calculator engine, but you must verify every number against your documents, Form 26AS/AIS and the e-filing portal's own computation before submitting. Filing your return on incometax.gov.in — step by step

          1
Collect your documents firstForm 16 (issued by ~15 June), Form 26AS, AIS/TIS, bank interest certificates, broker capital-gains statements. Use the Documents tab above — or upload them to our AI analyzer to get the numbers extracted and the tax computed for you.
          2
Reconcile with AIS and Form 26ASOn incometax.gov.in → e-File → Income Tax Returns → View AIS. Every rupee of TDS you claim must appear in 26AS; every SFT entry in AIS (interest, dividends, share sales) should be reflected in your return. Mismatches are the #1 cause of notices.
          3
Log in to the e-filing portalincometax.gov.in → Login with PAN (Aadhaar-OTP or password). Make sure PAN is linked to Aadhaar and your bank account is pre-validated (Profile → My Bank Account) — refunds only go to pre-validated accounts.
          4
Start the returne-File → Income Tax Returns → File Income Tax Return → AY 2026-27 → Online mode → Individual → pick your ITR form (use the Which-form tab). The portal pre-fills salary, interest and TDS from AIS — verify every pre-filled figure against your documents.
          5
Choose your tax regimeThe NEW regime is the default. If the old regime saves you tax (our AI analyzer shows the comparison), select 'opting out' in the return. Salaried taxpayers can switch every year inside the form; business income needs Form 10-IEA filed before the due date (switch allowed essentially once).
          6
Fill the schedulesSalary (from Form 16 Part B), house property, capital gains (Schedule CG — enter scrip-wise for 112A from your broker statement), other sources, deductions (80C/80D/80CCD only if OLD regime; 80CCD(2) employer NPS is allowed in NEW too), and Schedule VDA for crypto.
          7
Verify tax computation and pay any balanceThe portal computes tax + interest (234A/B/C). If tax is payable, pay via e-Pay Tax (challan 280, minor head 300 self-assessment) and enter the challan details before submitting.
          8
Submit and e-verify within 30 daysSubmit, then e-verify immediately — Aadhaar OTP is instant. Without e-verification within 30 days the return is treated as NOT filed. Alternatives: net-banking EVC, or posting the signed ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru.
          9
Track processing and refundCPC processes the return and emails the intimation u/s 143(1) — check that its figures match yours. Refunds usually credit in 1–5 weeks to the pre-validated account. Track: Services → Refund Status.

          Frequently asked questions

Which ITR form should a salaried person with some stock sales use?

If your listed-equity LTCG is within ₹1.25 lakh and you have no STCG, ITR-1 still works from AY 2025-26 onwards. Any STCG, LTCG above ₹1.25 lakh, or F&O/intraday activity moves you to ITR-2 (capital gains) or ITR-3 (F&O/intraday).

Is the new tax regime the default for AY 2026-27?

          Yes. For FY 2025-26 income the new regime applies unless you opt out in the return. New-regime slabs: 0–4L nil, 4–8L 5%, 8–12L 10%, 12–16L 15%, 16–20L 20%, 20–24L 25%, above 24L 30% — with a ₹60,000 Sec 87A rebate making income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free (₹12.75 lakh for salaried after the ₹75,000 standard deduction).

What documents does the AI analyzer need?

Form 16 alone is enough for a salary-only case. Add Form 26AS or AIS for TDS reconciliation, bank interest certificates, and your broker's capital-gains statement if you sold shares or mutual funds. PDFs and photos both work.

          Are my uploaded documents stored?

No. Documents are processed in memory, sent once to our AI provider for extraction, and discarded when the request completes. We log only anonymous usage metadata (file count, processing time) — never the documents or your PAN.

Why is my AIS/26AS PDF asking for a password?

Income-tax PDFs are password-protected. AIS: PAN (lowercase) + date of birth DDMMYYYY. Form 26AS from TRACES: date of birth DDMMYYYY. Enter the password in the analyzer's password box and we decrypt it in memory.

Old regime or new regime — which saves more tax?

It depends on your deductions. Roughly: if 80C + 80D + HRA + home-loan interest exceed ₹4–4.5 lakh on higher salaries, the old regime can win; otherwise the new regime usually does. The analyzer computes both regimes from your actual documents and shows the exact difference.

What is the difference between Form 16, Form 26AS and AIS?

Form 16 is your employer's salary + TDS certificate. Form 26AS is the tax department's ledger of all TDS/TCS and taxes deposited against your PAN. AIS is broader — it adds interest, dividends, share/MF transactions and other reported financial information. Your return must be consistent with all three.

When will I get my refund?

Usually 1–5 weeks after e-verification, credited to your pre-validated bank account. Delays are commonly due to non-validated accounts or mismatches with AIS/26AS.

Can this replace a Chartered Accountant?

For straightforward salary/interest/capital-gains returns it gives you a CA-style computation to file yourself. For audits, business books, notices, or foreign-asset complexity, use a professional — and treat our output as a well-prepared starting point.

          Is this tax advice?

No — it is AI-assisted information for education and preparation. Figures are extracted by an AI model and can contain errors; verify against your documents and the e-filing portal's computation before submitting your return.
