The selloff in Indian small-cap equities deepened on Wednesday as the Nifty Smallcap 100 dropped 2 per cent during intraday trading, marking its fifth straight session of losses. Over the past week, the index has significantly underperformed the benchmark indices, tumbling 5 per cent compared to a 2 per cent decline in the Nifty 50.
This correction follows an extended period of outperformance, during which the small-cap gauge surged 25 per cent over the preceding six months while the headline Nifty 50 declined 1.6 per cent.
Steep Cuts in High-Beta Counters
The session witnessed aggressive profit booking across several high-profile constituents. Afcons Infrastructure led the slide, sinking as much as 14 per cent in intraday trade.
Other major constituents also came under severe selling pressure:
- Firstsource Solutions (FSL), Pine Labs, Welspun Corp, Data Patterns (India), Tata Chemicals, and Narayana Hrudayalaya declined between 4 per cent and 6 per cent.
- HFCL, Sterlite Technologies, HEG, and MTAR Technologies were locked at their 5 per cent lower circuits.
- Afcons Infrastructure, Whirlpool of India, Ircon International, and Brainbees Solutions touched fresh 52-week lows during intraday trade.
Global Headwinds and Sustained FII Outflows
The extended weakness across smaller companies comes against the backdrop of sustained foreign portfolio outflows and heightened global uncertainty. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers for a fifth consecutive session on September 15, offloading equities worth ₹2,977.86 crore. Although domestic institutional investors (DIIs) provided some cushion by purchasing shares worth ₹2,686.05 crore, it proved insufficient to arrest the broader slide in risk assets.
Global macro conditions have further dampened risk appetite:
- US Federal Reserve Policy: Investors maintained a cautious stance ahead of the US central bank's upcoming interest rate decision.
- Elevated Treasury Yields: The benchmark US 10-year Treasury yield hovered around 4.99 per cent after briefly topping 5 per cent, tightening liquidity expectations.
- Commodity Pressures: Brent crude prices remained firm above USD 100 per barrel, raising concerns over domestic inflation and input costs.
Sectoral Rotation Toward Defensives
As elevated bond yields and input price pressures prompt investors to reduce exposure to richly valued small-cap counters, funds have increasingly rotated into defensive sectors. While the small-cap basket remained under intense pressure, defensive plays such as consumer goods saw buying interest, with the Nifty FMCG index gaining over 1.8 per cent intraday, buoyed by festive demand optimism.
Market analysts note that while the broader long-term trajectory for domestic manufacturing and infrastructure remains intact, the small-cap segment may face continued near-term volatility until foreign selling stabilizes and global interest rate trajectories become clearer.
