The Indian banking sector witnessed intense selling pressure on Monday as the Bank Nifty index broke through the crucial psychological threshold of 55,000, tumbling more than 800 points, or 1.6%, to touch an intraday low of 54,691.55.
The selloff in lenders mirrored broader weakness in domestic equities, where both the benchmark BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 declined by over 1% each. The Sensex slid more than 800 points, while the Nifty 50 dropped below the 22,900 mark amid sustained foreign fund outflows, firming US Treasury yields, and elevated international crude oil prices.
PSU and Private Lenders Under Pressure
The downturn across banking counters was broad-based, with almost the entire sector trading in the red. Barring Federal Bank, every constituent on the Bank Nifty recorded losses during the session.
Major Laggards in the Banking Pack:
- Yes Bank: Plunged over 4%, leading the losers' chart on the banking gauge.
- State Bank of India (SBI): Shed between 2% and 3%, pulling down public sector bank sentiment.
- Punjab National Bank (PNB): Declined by 2% to 3% alongside peer state-run lenders.
- IDFC First Bank: Fell between 2% and 3% amid private banking profit-booking.
- Union Bank of India & Canara Bank: Dropped 2% to 3% each as state-owned lenders faced across-the-board liquidations.
Macro Factors Driving Market Jitters
The selloff across banking shares was spurred by escalating external macro headwinds. Elevated geopolitical tensions in the Middle East drove Brent crude back up toward $98 a barrel, stoking inflation anxieties for India as a net oil importer.
At the same time, elevated US bond yields—hovering near 5%—have dampened risk sentiment globally, driving foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to trim exposure to rate-sensitive emerging market assets like Indian financials.
Technical Outlook and Support Zones
Market technicians warn that the breakdown below 55,000 could pave the way for extended downside if the index fails to stage a quick recovery.
According to Ruchit Jain, Head of Equity Technical Research, Wealth Management at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, the index's weakness marks a continuation of bearish momentum after violating its earlier support band of 56,000–55,800. Analysts peg immediate technical retracement support for the Bank Nifty around 54,330, with a deeper secondary floor near 53,300 if selling pressure persists.
