Questions
What is short selling?
Selling shares you do not own, intending to buy them back later at a lower price. In the Indian cash market, retail short sales must be squared off the same day; institutional investors may short only through the securities lending and borrowing mechanism.
Is this all the short interest in a stock?
No — and this is the most important caveat on the page. It is the short activity reported to NSE for the cash market. It excludes futures and options positions entirely, which is where most directional short exposure in India actually sits. A stock with no cash shorting can carry a very large short futures position.
Why does the data lag by a day?
NSE publishes the file for a session on the following trading day. The session date the figures refer to is printed at the bottom of the page rather than the publication date.
Does heavy shorting mean the stock will fall?
It means some participants sold it expecting a fall, on that day. Crowded short positions are also the raw material of a short squeeze. This page reports the activity and does not take a view on what follows.
How to read this page. Everything here is a description of data the exchange has already published — it is not a forecast, a recommendation, or a signal to buy or sell. Labels such as "accumulation", "short buildup" or "support" name a pattern in the numbers, nothing more. Short selling carries theoretically unlimited loss and is restricted for retail investors in the Indian cash market.
