RSI (Relative Strength Index)
A 0-100 momentum oscillator: how strong recent up-moves are compared with down-moves.
What is RSI?
The Relative Strength Index, created by J. Welles Wilder in 1978, measures the speed of recent price changes on a 0-100 scale. It compares the average size of up-days with the average size of down-days over a lookback window, 14 sessions by default. High readings mean gains have dominated recently; low readings mean losses have. It is the most widely used momentum indicator in Indian markets.
Formula
How to read it
- Above 70 is traditionally 'overbought' and below 30 'oversold'. These are statistical extremes, not reversal signals.
- In a strong uptrend RSI tends to hold between 40 and 80; in a downtrend between 20 and 60. The range RSI lives in tells you the trend.
- Crossing above 50 is a common momentum confirmation, and our technical score gives the most points for RSI between 55 and 70.
- Divergence, when price makes a new high but RSI does not, is often an earlier warning than the overbought level itself.
Common mistakes
- Selling a stock just because RSI is above 70. The strongest trends stay overbought for weeks.
- Buying every RSI-below-30 stock. In a downtrend oversold can stay oversold. Check whether the stock is above its 200-day average first.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good RSI to buy a stock?
There is no universal number. In an uptrend, pullbacks to RSI 40-50 have historically been better entries than waiting for 30, which strong stocks rarely reach. Below 30 is a better signal when the stock is still above its 200-day moving average.
Which RSI period does Flash Finance use?
14 sessions of daily closing prices with Wilder's smoothing, the original definition. Weekly and monthly RSI are also computed on the Technical Setup page for each stock.
