Questions
How is index contribution calculated?
Each constituent's free-float index weight multiplied by its return for the day. A stock with a 10% weight that rises 2% contributes 0.20 percentage points to the index move.
Why does the sum not exactly equal the index change?
Index weights are recomputed continuously as prices move, and the index divisor is adjusted for corporate actions. Using the published end-of-day weights gives an attribution that is accurate to a few hundredths of a percent, not an exact identity.
Why can the Nifty fall when most of its stocks rise?
Because it is weighted. If the three or four largest constituents fall while thirty small-weight names rise, the index falls. That gap between the index and the average stock is exactly what this page and the breadth page are for.
Where do the weights come from?
NSE's own published constituent list for the Nifty 50, refreshed with each price update. Sector labels come from our industry mapping, which is the same one used by the sector rotation tool.
