Addressing an audience at Panjab University in Chandigarh during the rollout of Project Jagruk, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey issued a sharp warning against speculative trading spurred by social media personalities, commonly known as finfluencers.
“Do not invest because someone told you to. Do not invest because everyone else is investing. Invest because you understand,” Pandey told attendees, underscoring that surging market accessibility must be backed by genuine investor comprehension and risk awareness.
Widening the Net: The Rural-Urban Knowledge Gap
The regulator highlighted significant structural gaps identified in a recent SEBI survey. While awareness of securities market products has reached 63% among Indian households, actual market participation remains constrained at just 9.5%. Furthermore, a sharp geographical divide persists: urban market participation stands at 15%, whereas rural participation languishes at 6%.
Even among active participants, the data indicates vulnerabilities, with only 36% of retail investors possessing high or moderate securities market knowledge. To counter these imbalances, SEBI is deploying Project Jagruk as a multi-channel educational outreach campaign running in English, Hindi, and 11 regional languages across print, television, digital platforms, radio, cinema, and outdoor advertising.
Crackdown on Unregistered Finfluencers
The launch comes amid a multi-pronged regulatory push targeting fraudulent schemes, pump-and-dump operations, and unregistered investment advisers operating across messaging applications and video platforms. SEBI has banned regulated intermediaries—including stockbrokers and mutual fund asset management companies—from associating with unregistered financial influencers to protect retail capital.
The regulator has also instructed stockbrokers and depository participants to prominently feature official investor awareness messages:
- From October 5 to October 31, 2026, brokers must display SEBI-specified awareness messages alongside risk disclosures on their landing pages.
- Beginning November 1, 2026, stockbrokers offering mobile applications are required to display investor awareness messages and mandatory risk warnings on alternate days directly on app interfaces.
Decade of Scale: Market Cap at ₹472 Lakh Crore
Highlighting India's domestic transformation over the past decade, Pandey pointed out that India’s total market capitalisation has quadrupled to approximately ₹472 lakh crore, supported by robust inflows from retail investors channeling household savings via systematic investment plans (SIPs).
Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) assets have concurrently expanded from ₹22 lakh crore to ₹78 lakh crore, facilitated by streamlined digital onboarding norms and operational efficiencies like the reduction of public offering listing timelines from T+6 to T+3 working days.
SEBI emphasized that while structural milestones and modern clearing mechanisms have enhanced market depth, sustained domestic wealth creation hinges on ensuring everyday investors do not fall prey to unvetted, high-risk advisory rackets online.
