India’s investment banking ecosystem registered its strongest performance on record, generating an estimated $1.1 billion in fees during the first nine months of 2026. According to the latest India Investment Banking Review by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), the fee tally represents a 1.8% increase year-on-year and stands as the highest year-to-date (YTD) total since data tracking began in 2000.
The surge in investment banking revenues was primarily driven by a sharp acceleration in equity capital markets (ECM) activity during the third quarter, headlined by landmark deals such as the long-awaited initial public offering (IPO) of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the central government's secondary stake dilution in Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
Equity Capital Markets Lead the Charge
During the nine-month period, Indian equity capital markets raised a cumulative $40.3 billion. Follow-on offerings formed the backbone of this activity, accounting for more than two-thirds of total ECM proceeds. Concurrently, the completion of marquee primary listings—led prominently by the NSE's public issue—propelled total IPO proceeds to one of the strongest year-to-date levels ever recorded in India.
“ECM activity accelerated significantly in the third quarter and was driven by a number of landmark transactions, most notably the National Stock Exchange of India IPO, which helped lift IPO proceeds to one of the strongest year-to-date totals on record,” said Elaine Tan, Senior Manager at LSEG Deals Intelligence.
Tan added that follow-on issuances formed the majority of the proceeds, supported by major disinvestments: “Follow-on issuance accounted for more than two-thirds of total ECM proceeds, including the government's stake sale in Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). While issuance was more concentrated in a handful of large transactions, the strength of marquee IPOs and continued investor participation point to a healthy capital markets backdrop for Indian issuers.”
Key Sector Contributions
Capital mobilization spanned multiple key industries, driven by ongoing capital expenditure, balance sheet optimization, and infrastructure expansions.
Top Sectors Driving Capital Raising:
- Financial Services: Continued to lead total deal volumes through mega-issuances, state disinvestments, and exchange listings.
- Industrials: Tapped public markets aggressively to fund manufacturing capacity additions and logistics infrastructure.
- Healthcare: Leveraged institutional demand to finance expansion projects and strategic acquisitions.
- Materials: Raised equity capital to fund backward integration and debt-deleveraging programs.
Outlook for the Indian Market
The record fee wallet reflects both structural maturity and abundant domestic liquidity within India's capital markets. Sustained retail and domestic institutional investor (DII) participation has enabled the absorption of large-scale secondary offerings without disrupting broader market stability. With several prominent companies lining up further primary offerings, investment banking activity in India continues to provide an essential bridge between corporate expansion plans and long-term investor capital.
