Alternative Fuel Vehicles Outsell Petrol in India for First Time: Key Stocks Positioned to Gain — September 8, 2026

India's automotive landscape recorded a milestone as alternative powertrains—compressed natural gas (CNG), strong and mild hybrids, and electric vehicles (EVs)—collectively outsold pure petrol cars for the first time in history.

According to retail registration data compiled by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' VAHAN portal, alternative fuels captured a combined 41.95% retail passenger vehicle market share in August 2026, edging out petrol and ethanol-blended variants at 40.85%. By comparison, petrol led alternative fuels by nearly 11 percentage points a year earlier.

Within alternative powertrains, CNG accounted for the largest share at 25.28%, followed by hybrids at 9.04% and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at 7.63%, while diesel's share stood at 17.21%. The transition has been accelerated by consumer focus on running-cost economics and buyer hesitation surrounding the rollout of E20 ethanol-blended fuel.

Automotive Manufacturers (OEMs)

  • Maruti Suzuki India Ltd: Holding an estimated 71% share of India's CNG passenger vehicle segment, the country's largest carmaker remains the primary beneficiary of the surge in natural gas vehicles. Maruti also captures hybrid volume growth through models like the Grand Vitara and Invicto while expanding its footprint into electric vehicles.
  • Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles: Tata Motors holds an estimated 43% market share in passenger electric vehicles, supported by models such as the Tiago EV, Nexon EV, and Punch EV. It also commands roughly 17% of the CNG vehicle market through its dual-cylinder technology lineup.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra: With a significant presence in electric SUVs and utility vehicles, M&M continues to expand its EV portfolio alongside hybrid powertrain developments to capture shifting customer preference.

City Gas Distribution (CGD) Companies

The continuous expansion of CNG's share to a record 25.28% provides structural volume visibility for downstream city gas distributors:

  • Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) & Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL): Both utility operators benefit directly from increased CNG dispensing volumes across major metropolitan clusters, offsetting lower industrial margin cycles with consistent transport fuel demand.
  • Gujarat Gas Ltd: Expanding geographical networks across secondary and semi-urban hubs support natural gas adoption in non-metro corridors where rural car retail grew 25% year-on-year.

Ancillary and Infrastructure Providers

  • EV Powertrain & Component Makers: Component manufacturers with high exposure to EV drivetrains and power electronics—including Sona BLW Precision Forgings and Uno Minda—are positioned to see higher kit value per vehicle as OEMs shift production away from conventional internal combustion powertrains.
  • Charging Infrastructure Operators: Utilities such as Tata Power are scaling public and private EV charging networks across national highways and urban centres, riding the 52% year-on-year retail volume jump in electric passenger cars.
