Indian mutual fund investors continued their aggressive equity accumulation in August, driving net inflows into open-ended equity schemes up by 18.75 percent month-on-month to Rs 29,328.62 crore. The figures, published by the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI), mark the highest equity monthly net intake in four months and represent a sharp rise from the Rs 24,697.39 crore recorded in July.
Despite significant market fluctuations, domestic retail participation remained robust, spearheaded by monthly Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) contributions that reached a record peak of Rs 32,297 crore in August, improving from Rs 31,961 crore in July.
Total assets under management (AUM) across the Indian mutual fund industry rose to Rs 87.07 lakh crore at the end of August, up from Rs 85.75 lakh crore at the end of July, supported by mark-to-market valuation gains and steady equity flows.
Equity Category Breakdown:
- Small-Cap Funds: Registered the highest net inflows among active equity categories at Rs 7,973.33 crore, rising from Rs 7,767.50 crore in July.
- Mid-Cap Funds: Attracted strong investor allocations of Rs 6,989.40 crore, up compared to Rs 6,192.31 crore in the previous month.
- Flexi-Cap Funds: Retained high preference among diversified investors, capturing Rs 5,059.42 crore in August versus Rs 4,709.08 crore in July.
- Sectoral and Thematic Funds: Logged net inflows of Rs 1,766.19 crore.
- Large-Cap Funds: Remained under pressure with net outflows of Rs 1,147.36 crore, albeit moderating from an outflow of Rs 1,321.69 crore in July.
Debt Funds Face Outflows While Hybrids and Gold Gain:
The debt-oriented category turned negative in August, posting a net outflow of Rs 8,127.32 crore, swinging sharply from a massive net inflow of Rs 1.87 lakh crore recorded in July.
Institutional treasury movements drove much of this divergence:
- Overnight funds suffered major net withdrawals of Rs 30,654.25 crore, reversing from inflows of Rs 40,412.55 crore in July.
- Liquid funds cushioned the segment with net inflows of Rs 19,934.29 crore, recovering from net outflows of Rs 1.19 lakh crore in July.
Due to the heavy debt redemptions, total net inflows for the overall mutual fund industry moderated sharply to Rs 41,353.60 crore in August compared to Rs 2.35 lakh crore in July.
Meanwhile, hybrid funds maintained healthy traction, drawing Rs 10,045 crore during the month. Arbitrage funds and multi-asset allocation schemes led this basket with inflows of Rs 3,789 crore and Rs 3,671 crore, respectively.
Gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) witnessed surging retail and institutional interest amid macroeconomic uncertainties, netting Rs 2,597 crore in August—a 67 percent increase compared to the Rs 1,559 crore brought in during July.
The August data confirms that Indian households continue to systematically reallocate financial savings into domestic equities through disciplined SIP routes, with a distinct tilt toward high-beta small and mid-cap segments even as institutional debt flows remain volatile around corporate liquidity cycles.
