India Adds Record 8.2 GWh of Battery Storage in First Half of 2026 as Sector Scales Rapidly

India's energy storage sector has decisively transitioned from pilot trials to utility-scale execution, adding an unprecedented 8.2 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity during the first half of 2026. The additions represent an 84-fold expansion compared to the 98.4 MWh commissioned in the same period last year, according to the newly released Q2 and 1H 2026 India’s Energy Storage Landscape Report by Mercom India Research.

The sharp acceleration in commissioning has lifted India's cumulative installed BESS capacity to 9.3 GWh as of June 2026, positioning storage infrastructure as a pillar of the nation's clean energy grid integration.

Standalone Storage Takes Centre Stage

A defining feature of the build-out is the dominant shift toward standalone grid storage facilities. Rather than co-locating batteries primarily with solar generation sites, developers are increasingly deploying dedicated systems that provide ancillary and frequency balancing services directly to the transmission network.

Cumulative BESS Breakdown by Technology:

  • Standalone battery storage systems: 83% of total installations
  • Solar-plus-wind projects with round-the-clock (RTC) capabilities: 9% of total installations
  • Solar-plus-storage projects: 8% of total installations
  • Floating solar-plus-storage and other hybrid configurations: Marginal shares

During the second quarter of 2026, India commissioned 3.6 GWh of battery storage. While this represented a 22% decline from the peak additions recorded in the first quarter of the year, standalone installations made up nearly 98% of all new capacity brought online during the quarter.

Geographic Concentration and State Rankings

Renewable-rich western states continue to dominate deployment as state transmission utilities look to curb generation curtailment during peak daytime solar generation hours.

Top States by Cumulative Installed BESS Capacity:

  • Rajasthan: 36% share of cumulative installations
  • Gujarat: 20% share of cumulative installations
  • Maharashtra: 5% share of cumulative installations

Looking ahead, Gujarat maintains the largest pipeline of standalone battery storage capacity under development, followed closely by Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.

In addition to chemical batteries, India also had 7.4 GW of installed pumped hydro energy storage capacity as of June 2026, of which approximately 6 GW is operational. Uttarakhand added 250 MW of pumped hydro storage capacity during the second quarter of 2026.

Procurement Surges but Tender-to-Auction Gap Widens

Tendering activity across public and state agencies rose significantly during the first half of 2026, with 28 GW of energy storage capacity tendered—an 86% increase compared to 15 GW tendered in the first half of 2025.

However, completed project auctions told a different story. Total auctioned storage capacity dropped 18% year-on-year to 9 GW in 1H 2026, down from 11 GW auctioned in the corresponding period of 2025.

Analysts noted that volatility in global battery cell pricing and discovered auction tariffs has created hesitation among off-takers and procurers, who often pause auction completions in anticipation of more competitive pricing. The outlook for the sector remains tied to how rapidly tendered volumes are successfully auctioned and awarded, alongside the availability of bankable long-term power sale agreements and timely grid interconnections.
