Nifty 50 Gains 75 Points to Settle at 23,346 as Easing Crude Prices Counter Flat Sensex

Indian equity benchmarks ended on a mixed note on Friday, with the broader NSE Nifty 50 advancing by more than 75 points even as the 30-share BSE Sensex settled fractionally lower. Lower international crude oil prices helped soothe inflation worries and supported selective domestic buying, counterbalancing pressure from ongoing foreign institutional selling.

At the closing bell, the Nifty 50 stood at 23,346.40, up 75.80 points or 0.33 per cent. In contrast, the BSE Sensex closed at 74,294.96, dipping 19.63 points or 0.03 per cent.

Crude Relief Amid Macro Headwinds

International oil benchmarks softened during the session, with Brent crude falling 1.39 per cent to around USD 103.31 per barrel. For an import-dependent economy like India, any reduction in global crude prices provides immediate relief to the twin deficits, lowers corporate input costs, and tempers imported inflationary pressures.

However, broader sentiment remained measured due to persistent outflows from foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and elevated US dollar levels, which continue to keep risk appetite in emerging markets under check.

Vikram Kasat, Chief Business Officer – Advisory and Dealing at PL Capital, noted that domestic benchmarks showed strength by recovering past losses on the back of favorable global cues and dip-buying.

"Easing crude oil prices provided some relief, though persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows and elevated dollar levels remain key monitorables," Kasat said. He noted that market moves are likely to stay range-bound and cautious as market participants weigh global interest rate policies, international energy price trends, and institutional capital flows, directing interest primarily toward companies with resilient fundamentals.

Sectoral Trends

Broad-market participation leaned positive, with almost every sectoral basket on the National Stock Exchange finishing in positive territory, with the exception of technology.

Key sectoral performers on Friday:

  • Nifty Realty: Emerged as the session's top outperformer, climbing 1.64 per cent.
  • Nifty Media: Advanced 1.38 per cent on broad-based gains.
  • Nifty Metal: Gained 1.24 per cent, supported by lower input-cost worries.
  • Nifty Auto & Pharma: Added 0.55 per cent and 0.54 per cent, respectively.
  • Nifty PSU Bank: Climbed 0.54 per cent, mirroring banking resilience.
  • Nifty FMCG: Closed with modest gains of 0.20 per cent.
  • Nifty IT: Was the sole decliner of the day, dropping 1.73 per cent and dragging down the headline Sensex.

Outlook for Indian Investors

While softer crude prices offer support to energy-intensive and domestic-facing sectors like real estate, manufacturing, and consumer durables, the market's upside remains capped by global monetary conditions and foreign selling pressure. Analysts advise retail investors to remain selective, focusing on fundamentally sound businesses capable of navigating currency volatility and uncertain institutional liquidity.
