Abakkus Mutual Fund has received formal regulatory approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to set up a Specialised Investment Fund (SIF) platform, which will operate under the brand name Fokkus.
The approval, formally granted by the capital markets regulator on August 28, 2026, clears the path for the fund house to broaden its investment portfolio and roll out specialized investment solutions tailored to evolving investor appetites. Through the Fokkus platform, Abakkus plans to introduce specialized strategies across equity, debt, and hybrid asset classes, subject to regulatory filings and operational clearances.
Bridging Mutual Funds and PMS
The SIF framework, originally introduced by SEBI effective April 1, 2025, is designed to occupy a unique space in India's asset management landscape. It bridges the gap between retail mutual fund schemes and higher-ticket Portfolio Management Services (PMS) or Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs).
Under the SIF construct, fund managers obtain greater flexibility in asset allocation, exposure limits, and portfolio construction strategies, allowing them to pursue differentiated investment mandates. At the same time, the framework preserves the robust investor-protection mechanisms, transparent reporting standards, and regulatory oversight that govern standard mutual fund products.
Key Objectives of the Fokkus Platform:
- Differentiated Mandates: Deploying specialized strategies across equity, fixed income, and hybrid asset categories.
- Research-Driven Approach: Utilizing the firm’s bottom-up, fundamental research capabilities and discipline to generate alpha.
- Enhanced Flexibility: Leveraging the structural flexibility granted under SEBI's SIF norms while upholding investor safety standards.
Strategic Milestone for Abakkus
Commenting on the approval, Sunil Singhania, Chairman and Managing Director of Abakkus, noted that entering the SIF space represents an important new chapter for the firm. He emphasized that across its offerings—including AIFs, PMS, Mutual Funds, and now SIFs—the firm's guiding objective remains focused on identifying high-conviction opportunities and generating long-term wealth through research-backed investing.
Abakkus, which established a strong foothold in the alternates and PMS space before obtaining its mutual fund license from SEBI in 2025, has scaled its presence across Indian listed equities and private market investments. The fund house noted that detailed disclosures regarding specific scheme investment objectives, asset allocation mixes, risk factors, and launch timelines for individual Fokkus strategies will be disclosed following the submission and approval of required regulatory filings.
