US electric vehicle pioneer Tesla is expanding its commercial footprint in India with the opening of an experience centre in Chennai. The new outlet marks the Elon Musk-led company’s third retail location in the southern region—following Bengaluru and Hyderabad—and its sixth store nationwide.
The Chennai facility joins Tesla's existing network of experience centres and retail sites located at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), New Delhi’s Aerocity, Gurugram’s Orchid Business Park, Bengaluru’s VR Mall, and Hyderabad’s HITEC City.
Expanding Regional Reach and Sales Trajectory
Tesla’s expansion into Tamil Nadu follows steady traction in deliveries since entering the Indian market. The company has registered more than 600 car sales across India in the calendar year to date, with September recording around 150 units sold.
In Tamil Nadu alone, Tesla has logged 38 vehicle deliveries so far this year. The state has emerged as one of the country's most active markets for electric mobility, recording over 19,700 electric passenger vehicle sales in the same period. The broader luxury EV segment in the state has seen established premium brands—including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volvo, and BYD—jointly deliver approximately 800 units.
The Chennai experience store will serve as a customer touchpoint where prospective buyers can inspect vehicles, schedule consultations, and arrange test drives.
India Portfolio and Specifications
Tesla currently markets two configurations of the Model Y SUV in the Indian market:
Model Y Variants Available in India:
- Model Y Premium Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): Priced starting at ₹50.89 lakh, this five-seat variant delivers an estimated driving range of up to 500 km, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, and provides 2,138 litres of cargo capacity.
- Model Y L All-Wheel Drive (AWD): Priced starting at ₹61.99 lakh, this long-wheelbase, three-row configuration seats six passengers, delivers up to 681 km of range, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, and offers 2,539 litres of storage.
Orders remain available directly via Tesla’s digital platform, supported by nationwide delivery logistics and home-charging setup options.
Infrastructure and Market Strategy
To support the growing fleet, Tesla is expanding its dedicated service, body shop, and Supercharger infrastructure to Chennai and other Tier-1 urban locations. Tesla’s Supercharger stations provide high-speed replenishment, restoring up to 275 km of range in 15 minutes.
Despite ongoing industry speculation regarding potential local manufacturing commitments, Tesla’s India approach remains focused on retail sales and imported Completely Built Units (CBUs). The direct retail model enables the automaker to evaluate brand penetration, test affluent regional pockets, and expand after-sales infrastructure before committing to domestic factory investments.
