India's electric two-wheeler (E2W) adoption has hit a major inflection point, with cumulative retail registrations crossing the 15-lakh mark in just nine months of calendar year 2026. According to government Vahan registration data, total E2W retail volumes reached 15.61 lakh units between January and September 2026.
This represents an impressive 62% year-on-year jump compared to the 9.61 lakh units registered during the same period in 2025. Notably, the nine-month total has already outpaced full-year 2025 volumes—which stood at 13.42 lakh units—by approximately 2.19 lakh units, even before entering the high-volume festive quarter.
Established Players Cement Their Oligopoly
The primary driver of this rapid expansion has been the consolidation of market power among four major manufacturers: TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, and Hero MotoCorp. Together, the quartet accounted for approximately 76% of total electric two-wheeler registrations nationwide during the nine-month period, up from roughly 66% a year earlier.
In September 2026 alone, retail registrations climbed 7.7% month-on-month to reach 1.97 lakh units, propelled by strong festive stocking and steady urban commuter demand:
- TVS Motor Company: Retained market leadership in September with 53,989 registrations, commanding a 26.06% market share, powered by steady demand for its iQube lineup.
- Bajaj Auto: Maintained the second position with 48,383 units registered, achieving a 23.51% market share on the back of rising Chetak volumes.
- Ather Energy: Stood firmly at third with 30,479 registrations (14.71% market share), supported by strong consumer uptake of the family-focused Rizta scooter alongside its flagship 450 platform.
- Hero MotoCorp: Registered strong sequential growth with 24,306 units, capturing an 11.73% market share with its expanding Vida portfolio.
Together, TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto alone delivered nearly half of all electric two-wheelers sold across India during the month.
Shift in Market Dynamics
The steady rise of legacy original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) has fundamentally altered competitive dynamics in the electric vehicle segment. Former market leader Ola Electric saw its monthly market share slip further to roughly 6.5% in September with 13,449 units, standing as the only player among the top five to witness a month-on-month decline.
The transition reveals that Indian consumers are increasingly gravitating toward established brands with mature after-sales networks, service reliability, and broader practical family-scooter portfolios. The transition has also been aided by supportive government policy under the PM E-DRIVE initiative and elevated conventional fuel prices, which continue to drive total cost of ownership (TCO) parity in favor of electric mobility.
Investor Takeaway
The milestone demonstrates that electric two-wheeler penetration in India is moving past early adopters and integrating into mainstream mass-market retail. For public market investors, the continuous volume expansion provides operational leverage and margin headroom for legacy automakers like TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto. Their ability to scale without entering destructive price wars positions them well to defend overall corporate profitability as the sector heads into peak festive demand.
