Green Powertrains Drive the Surge
The centerpiece of Tata Motors' volume expansion was its aggressive alternative-fuel portfolio. Electric vehicle (EV) sales, spanning domestic and export markets, nearly doubled to 47,150 units during the quarter, jumping 90% from 24,855 units reported in Q2 FY26. EV penetration within the company's portfolio expanded to approximately 23%, significantly outperforming the broader automotive industry's estimated EV adoption rate of roughly 8%. In September alone, EV despatches rose 67% year-on-year to 15,384 units.
Concurrently, the company’s compressed natural gas (CNG) range posted its highest-ever quarterly sales, accounting for 28% of total volumes. Together, zero-emission and alternative-fuel vehicles accounted for 51% of Tata Motors' passenger car dispatches during Q2 FY27.
Product Traction and Industry Outlook
According to Managing Director and CEO Shailesh Chandra, the company entered the key festive period backed by a solid order book and sustained consumer interest. The Tata Punch emerged as India's best-selling SUV during the quarter, supported by recent additions and variants such as the Curvv SeriesX and Sierra Legend Series.
For investors on Dalal Street, Tata Motors' ability to post volume growth well ahead of industry averages and cement its market positioning in both SUVs and electrified mobility provides clear revenue visibility heading into the high-demand festive quarters.
