FPI Equity Outflows Reach Rs 44,166 Crore in October as 2026 Withdrawals Cross Rs 3 Lakh Crore

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have intensified their selling in Indian equities, pulling out Rs 44,166 crore so far in October. With this latest wave of selling, aggregate equity withdrawals by foreign investors in 2026 have surpassed Rs 3.04 lakh crore, according to data from the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL).

The current year's persistent foreign liquidation is significantly steeper than the Rs 1.66 lakh crore net outflow recorded across the entire calendar year 2025. October’s steep withdrawals follow a net exit of Rs 35,861 crore in September. The sharp reversal in sentiment arrived after brief buying spurts during the summer, when FPIs pumped Rs 20,200 crore into Indian shares in July and Rs 29,631 crore in August.

Macroeconomic Pressures Driving the Exit

Market analysts attribute the relentless overseas sell-off to a combination of rising geopolitical tensions, elevated energy prices, and resilient US interest rates.

The primary factors driving foreign outflows include:

  • Surging US Yields and Stronger Dollar: High US bond yields alongside a firmer US dollar have prompted foreign asset managers to reallocate money back toward safer, fixed-income US instruments.
  • Energy Security Risks: Elevated crude oil prices driven by Gulf supply concerns continue to pose persistent balance-of-payments and inflation concerns for India as a net oil importer.
  • North Asian Rebalancing: Foreign capital has actively rotated into North Asian markets to participate in the artificial intelligence-led rally, where valuations have appeared comparatively more attractive.

Impact on Indian Benchmarks and Domestic Absorption

The steady exodus has weighed heavily on Indian benchmark indices throughout the year. V K Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit Investments, noted that massive FPI selling has been the single largest drag on domestic equities, with the Nifty delivering negative returns of 13.9% year-to-date in 2026. He noted that as long as US bond yields remain at elevated levels, FPIs are likely to remain net sellers until domestic valuations reset to more favorable risk-reward levels.

However, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) have largely absorbed the supply, preventing disorderly market disruptions. Vedant Gupte, co-founder and CEO of investment platform Trackk, highlighted that the liquidation should be viewed as a global asset repositioning rather than a vote of no confidence against India's long-term economic prospects. Gupte pointed out that domestic inflows have absorbed this selling without market structures breaking down, establishing a durable floor under Indian equities.

Mixed Trends Across Debt Routes

In the debt market, overseas portfolio participation presented a mixed picture. Foreign investors pulled out Rs 1,921 crore through the Fully Accessible Route (FAR) and offloaded Rs 233 crore via the Voluntary Retention Route (VRR). However, these redemptions were offset by net purchases of Rs 4,729 crore routed through the general debt route.

For Indian market participants, near-term direction is expected to hinge heavily on second-quarter corporate earnings, including upcoming announcements from major IT firms like Wipro and HCL Tech, along with official domestic inflation prints, rupee fluctuations, and geopolitical developments across global energy corridors.
