India’s battered equity derivatives segment is set to receive a substantial boost after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) announced a reversal of its settlement pricing mechanism, providing a fresh lifeline to a market hit by volume declines and elevated expiry volatility.
Under the revised framework taking effect on December 7, 2026, clearing corporations will revert to calculating derivatives settlement prices on expiration days using the volume-weighted average price (VWAP) of the underlying securities during the final 30 minutes of regular continuous trading.
Rolling Back the Closing Auction for Derivatives
The regulatory shift partially rolls back the Closing Auction Session (CAS) framework introduced on August 3, 2026. Under that system, closing prices determined via a post-market auction window were applied to settle expiring futures and options contracts.
However, the mechanism caused severe friction. Traded prices and index benchmark values experienced wild swings near the close on expiry days, triggering extensive pushback from market participants and driving many proprietary and options traders to scale back their operations.
The operational turbulence caused exchange activity to drop sharply:
- Total derivatives turnover on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) dropped 19.2% month-on-month to ₹34.48 trillion in August, marking an 18-month low.
- Average daily turnover tumbled by roughly one-third on the BSE following the initial CAS implementation.
Key Mechanics of the Revised Framework
While SEBI is withdrawing auction-based settlement for expiring contracts, it will retain the closing auction mechanism for cash-equity pricing from 3:30 p.m. to 3:40 p.m.
Operational Timelines and Expiry Rules:
- Settlement Calculation: Index derivatives expiring on the day will settle using an index value calculated from the VWAPs of its constituent stocks over the final 30 minutes of continuous trading (3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.) across exchanges. Expiring stock contracts will similarly settle on the individual stock's 30-minute cash VWAP.
- Trading Windows: Regular index derivative contracts will continue trading until 3:45 p.m., but contracts expiring that day will stop trading at 3:30 p.m. Stock derivatives will continue trading until 3:45 p.m., including on their expiry days.
- Cash Market Timing: The cash market closing auction will run between 3:30 p.m. and 3:40 p.m., featuring a random close between 3:38 p.m. and 3:40 p.m., followed by a post-close session from 3:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Order Transition: Revised rules governing how unexecuted limit and iceberg orders transition from continuous trading into the auction session are slated to take effect on February 8, 2027.
Market Confidence and Brokerage Impact
Market analysts and brokerage leadership welcomed the decision as a stabilizing measure that removes ambiguity for options writers and arbitrageurs.
Dhiraj Relli, Managing Director of HDFC Securities Ltd., stated that participants will now have greater clarity and predictability around expiry settlement prices. He noted that the revision should help restore trader confidence, reduce uncertainty-driven changes in trading behavior, and potentially bring derivatives volumes closer to pre-CAS levels over time.
Raj Deepak Singh, Vice President of derivatives and quantitative research at ICICI Direct, remarked that options traders who had moved away from the market may start returning as volatility stabilizes.
The regulatory adjustment offers breathing room to discount and retail broking platforms as well as bourse operators. Following the announcement, Jefferies Financial Group noted that reduced expiration volatility should improve overall volume recovery, benefiting retail brokerages whose trade counts had remained compressed following the August rule changes.
