Shares of home services marketplace Urban Company slipped as much as 9.45% during intraday trade on Monday, touching a low of ₹144.61 per share after the company reported a sharp widening in its net loss for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 (Q2 FY27).
The selloff followed the company’s quarterly earnings release on Friday, which revealed that elevated operational expenses and steep investments into its instant housekeeping vertical, InstaHelp, substantially offset strong top-line expansion.
Widening Deficit Overshadows Top-Line Growth
Urban Company posted a consolidated net loss of ₹182.48 crore for Q2 FY27, more than tripling from a loss of ₹59.33 crore reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. On a sequential basis, the bottom-line deficit nearly doubled from ₹92.12 crore posted in Q1 FY27.
Total expenses for the quarter escalated to ₹745.67 crore, compared to ₹461.7 crore in the year-ago period and ₹639.88 crore in the preceding quarter.
The surge in spending outpaced top-line gains. Consolidated revenue from operations rose 41.4% year-on-year to ₹537.29 crore, compared to ₹380.03 crore in Q2 FY26. On a sequential basis, revenue growth was largely muted at 1.7% over the ₹528.34 crore reported in the April-June quarter.
Segment Performance: InstaHelp Weighs on Profitability
While the company's core operations generated healthy operating leverage, heavy front-loaded expenditure on InstaHelp dragged down overall margins.
Key segment performance highlights for Q2 FY27:
- InstaHelp: The on-demand daily cleaning and housekeeping service generated ₹20.54 crore in revenue, up from ₹1.43 crore a year ago. However, segment loss widened sharply to ₹173.12 crore from ₹42.91 crore in Q2 FY26, as the company prioritized customer acquisition and introductory pricing amid competition.
- India Consumer Services (ex-InstaHelp): The core domestic services business grew 28.4% year-on-year to ₹336.38 crore, generating an improved segment profit of ₹43.39 crore compared to ₹10.13 crore in Q2 FY26.
- Native (Products Business): Revenue from its private-label appliances and water purifier vertical climbed 39.7% year-on-year to ₹105.37 crore, while the segment loss narrowed to ₹7.95 crore from ₹10.94 crore in the year-ago quarter.
- International Business: Cross-border operations saw revenue jump 82.1% year-on-year to ₹75 crore, posting a segment profit of ₹5.74 crore compared to ₹43 lakh last year.
On an operating level, Urban Company logged an adjusted EBITDA loss of ₹144 crore, reflecting a ₹174-crore deliberate adjusted EBITDA burn in InstaHelp, even as adjusted EBITDA outside InstaHelp grew 213% year-on-year to ₹30 crore.
Capital Raise and Category Expansion
Alongside the financial results, the company's board cleared an enabling resolution to raise up to ₹2,500 crore through the issuance of equity shares or other convertible securities via Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP), subject to shareholder approval.
Urban Company stated that it closed the quarter with ₹1,901 crore in cash and treasury balances, noting that the planned capital raise is intended to provide strategic flexibility to consolidate market leadership in high-frequency verticals and evaluate potential inorganic opportunities.
Additionally, the board granted in-principle approval to evaluate entry into residential air conditioners under the Native brand, leveraging its extensive existing service and installation footprint across Indian metros.
Market Reaction and Brokerage Outlook
Investor reaction remained cautious on Monday, reflecting concerns over prolonged margin dilution and the potential equity dilution from the proposed ₹2,500-crore QIP.
Domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal maintained a "Neutral" stance on the counter while cutting its target price to ₹165 per share, citing heightened category investments and a balanced risk-reward profile over the medium term. Management reiterated its longer-term targets, projecting adjusted EBITDA breakeven by Q3 FY28 and an adjusted EBITDA target of ₹1,000 crore by FY31.
