IndiGo to Shift 12 Daily International Flights to Navi Mumbai Airport Starting February 2027
In a major breakthrough resolving weeks of industry impasse over slot relocations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, low-cost carrier IndiGo and Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL) have reached an agreement to begin shifting international operations to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) starting in February 2027.
Under the phased transition plan running between February and July 2027, IndiGo will shift 12 daily international departures from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to the newly operational NMIA. The relocation covers IndiGo's current flights to 11 overseas destinations:
- Bahrain
- Riyadh
- Dammam
- Jeddah
- Madinah
- Kuwait
- Ras Al Khaimah
- Fujairah
- Muscat
- Dhaka
- Jakarta
In addition to shifting these 11 existing routes, the airline will introduce a new daily international service connecting Navi Mumbai to Kathmandu, taking its NMIA international network to 12 overseas destinations. To prevent transit friction and maintain feed traffic, IndiGo will concurrently transfer the necessary domestic connecting feeder flights from CSMIA to NMIA.
Ending the Relocation Deadlock
The agreement marks a formal resolution after an earlier mandate by CSMIA operator Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) faced sharp pushback from commercial carriers. MIAL had previously proposed shifting roughly 265 of CSMIA's 770 weekly international departures to Navi Mumbai from late October, triggering operational and commercial concerns from nearly 46 domestic and international airlines.
Airlines cited concerns regarding schedule disruptions, domestic-to-international transfer difficulties, and passenger convenience. Following intervention by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, MIAL deferred the forced shift to structure an agreed, phased roadmap with major operators. Alongside IndiGo, the Air India Group has also charted a phased transfer of selected regional and domestic flights to NMIA starting in late 2026.
Strategic Impact on IndiGo and CSMIA Expansion
For investors tracking InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), the calibrated migration to NMIA addresses two critical strategic bottlenecks:
- Long-haul capacity creation at CSMIA: Relocating regional short-haul international flights to Navi Mumbai will free up precious, highly contested peak-hour runway slots at CSMIA. IndiGo plans to use these newly opened CSMIA slots to expand premium long-range international routes into wider Asia, Africa, and Europe using its incoming deliveries of Airbus A320, A321, and long-range A321XLR aircraft during 2027.
- Facilitating Terminal 1 redevelopment: Shifting domestic feeder flights alongside international routes provides Adani Airport Holdings the room to initiate the structural redevelopment of CSMIA's aging Terminal 1 by 2030 without causing severe passenger disruptions.
AAHL stated that it is collaborating closely with IndiGo to implement the necessary airside and terminal infrastructure at NMIA to ensure passenger transit between domestic and international operations remains seamless as NMIA develops into a long-term international aviation hub.
