Nifty Closes Below 22,700 as Realty and Oil Drag Sensex Down 353 Points
Indian benchmark equity indices closed in the red on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as sustained selling in real estate, energy, and technology heavyweights overshadowed gains in financial and consumer-facing counters. The NSE Nifty 50 index slipped below the crucial 22,700 psychological mark, falling 50.90 points or 0.22% to settle at 22,698.85. The 30-share BSE Sensex dropped 352.64 points, or 0.48%, to finish the session at 73,246.03.
The broader market presented a mixed picture, showing pockets of resilience beneath benchmark weakness. While the headline indices stayed suppressed, the Nifty Midcap index ended in the green, gaining 66.55 points or 0.50% to 13,286.60. The banking gauge also held firm against the market tide, with the Bank Nifty adding 292.50 points, or 0.54%, to end at 54,267.40, supported by Fin Nifty, which advanced 0.47% to 24,418.25.
Sectoral Heatmap: Realty and Oil Tumble
Sectoral indices experienced sharp divergence throughout the session:
Major Laggards:
- Realty: Emerged as the biggest underperformer of the day, tumbling nearly 4.5% as investors booked profits amid rate and demand sensitivities.
- Aerospace & Defense: Registered steep losses following extended profit-taking in capital goods and allied manufacturing plays.
- Oil & Gas / Energy: Faced broad selling pressure, declining alongside heavyweights as geopolitical developments renewed volatility in international energy supply.
- Information Technology: Ended down, contributing to the pressure on the Sensex.
Top Performers:
- Leisure Services: Bucked the broader decline, rallying 3.56% on robust buying interest.
- Retail and Diversified: Provided valuable cushion against deeper market corrections.
- Automobile, Consumer Durables, and Pharma: Maintained steady demand, climbing roughly 1% each.
Movers and Corporate Action
Among individual constituents, large-cap drags included Reliance Industries, Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel (down 1.42% to Rs 1,950), and Tata Steel (down 1.37% to Rs 169.15).
On the earnings front, Tanla Platforms captured strong market attention after posting its Q2 financial results. The company delivered a 17.1% increase in consolidated net profit and declared an interim dividend, drawing active investor interest despite the subdued mood across broader tech counters.
Macro Backdrop and Currency Pressure
Elevated crude oil prices and global geopolitical uncertainty continued to cast a shadow over domestic sentiment. Oil prices saw renewed momentum following reports of attacks on Saudi Arabian infrastructure, stoking supply concerns and overshadowing recent diplomatic de-escalation efforts. Because India imports the vast majority of its crude requirements, sustained price spikes raise concerns regarding imported inflation, corporate margin compressions, and trade balance stress.
The Indian rupee tracked equity market weakness, closing 11 paise lower at 95.23 against the U.S. dollar compared to its previous close of 95.12.
Commenting on the session's action, Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, pointed out that domestic equities remained volatile and traded lower as a fresh spike in crude oil prices and sharp selling in IT stocks weighed on investor sentiment. However, resilience across banking, auto, and pharma alongside value-buying at lower levels helped indices recover a significant portion of their intraday losses. Nair noted that while markets continue to monitor policy signals from the U.S. Federal Reserve, the most challenging phase of the market correction appears to be factored in, allowing long-term investors to selectively accumulate quality businesses at attractive valuations.
