GAIL Net Profit Zooms 139% to Rs 4,720 Crore in Q2 as Board Approves GAIL Gas IPO
State-run natural gas major GAIL (India) Limited delivered an impressive earnings performance for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 (Q2 FY27), clocking a consolidated net profit surge of over 137%–139% year-on-year to approximately Rs 4,720 crore (Rs 4,723.75 crore).
The Maharatna public sector undertaking witnessed robust topline momentum, with consolidated revenue from operations advancing nearly 33% year-on-year to Rs 47,301 crore. On a standalone basis, net profit for the quarter rose sharply to Rs 4,650 crore, pushing total standalone net profit for the first half of the fiscal year (H1 FY27) to Rs 8,942.55 crore on operating revenues of Rs 84,905.19 crore.
Board Greenlights GAIL Gas IPO
In a landmark strategic decision for the domestic energy market, GAIL's board of directors approved the listing of its wholly-owned city gas distribution (CGD) subsidiary, GAIL Gas Limited, on domestic bourses.
Key details of the corporate restructuring and public issue include:
- The board approved an initial public offering (IPO) facilitating a dilution of up to 25% equity stake in GAIL Gas Limited.
- GAIL will transfer and transition six of its existing city gas distribution networks directly into GAIL Gas Limited by January 1, 2027, unifying its retail gas footprint.
- The proposed listing is subject to standard regulatory approvals from market regulator SEBI, stock exchanges, and administrative clearances from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Operational Momentum Across Natural Gas Segments
The sharp profit rebound was driven by steady throughput growth across GAIL's key transmission corridors and distribution networks. Gas transmission and trading segments benefited from stabilized liquefied natural gas (LNG) import costs and expanding industrial consumption, providing healthy operating leverage.
The company's earnings beat comes at a time when India is actively striving to raise the share of natural gas in its primary energy mix from around 6% to 15% by 2030. The listing of GAIL Gas is poised to unlock value for shareholders while providing dedicated capital for city gas pipeline expansion, compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, and piped natural gas (PNG) domestic connections across authorized geographical areas.
