Indian Railways is currently facing an unprecedented challenge as sophisticated AI-generated fake train tickets are being detected across various divisions, raising concerns about digital fraud and revenue loss. The emergence of these counterfeit tickets, which mimic genuine ones with alarming accuracy, has prompted railway authorities to implement stricter verification protocols and introduce new rules for passengers.

Incidents Spark Nationwide Crackdown

The issue gained prominence following several high-profile incidents:

• Jammu Division: During a special campaign conducted from December 15 to 21, 2025, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway detected four cases of fake Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) tickets generated using Artificial Intelligence. This drive, which checked over 2,200 UTS tickets, was initiated after a similar incident came to light in the Jaipur Division. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal emphasized that appropriate penalties were imposed on offenders and warned against tampering with tickets.
• Jaipur Division: Earlier, a significant case on the Jaipur route revealed students using AI tools to replicate a single unreserved ticket to allow seven passengers to travel, highlighting the potential for large-scale fraud. The fake tickets appeared authentic, complete with QR codes and travel details, making detection difficult during routine checks.
• Mumbai Suburban Network: In late November 2025, three passengers were arrested on a Mumbai AC local for using AI-generated fake season tickets. They presented images from their phone's document folder rather than the official UTS app, and all three tickets surprisingly bore the same fake UTS number, leading to their detection.

Indian Railways Responds with Policy Changes and Enhanced Vigilance

In response to these alarming developments, Indian Railways has moved swiftly to fortify its ticketing system:

• Mandatory Printed Copies for Unreserved Tickets: As a significant policy shift, Indian Railways has mandated that passengers holding unreserved tickets purchased through the UTS app, Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs), or ticket counters must now carry a physical printout. Mobile-based displays alone will no longer be accepted for these specific types of unreserved tickets.
• Clarification on Digital Tickets: While the new rule applies to unreserved tickets from certain channels, Indian Railways has clarified that reserved e-tickets and m-tickets remain valid in digital form and can still be shown on mobile phones. For other digitally booked unreserved tickets where no physical printout is taken, passengers are permitted to display them on the same mobile device used for booking.
• Intensified Checks and Technology Integration: Railway authorities have intensified vigilance across all divisions. Ticket Examiners (TTEs) and Ticket Checkers (TCs) have been equipped with special mobile applications to scan QR codes and verify unique ID numbers, enabling instant identification of fake or edited tickets.
• Warning to Passengers and Agents: Officials have warned passengers against tampering with tickets using AI or any other digital means, stating that such acts are punishable offenses with severe legal consequences, including imprisonment. The Railways is also stepping up monitoring of ticket brokers to curb the misuse of technology by unauthorized agents.
