Analysis: Reasons Behind the Moves

The Indian equity markets witnessed a volatile session on Wednesday, February 25, 2026. The Nifty 50 initially surged in the morning trade, driven by a sharp rebound in the Information Technology (IT) sector. This recovery followed a significant tech-led rally on Wall Street and positive global sentiment surrounding artificial intelligence. Specifically, news from AI startup Anthropic regarding new partnerships helped ease recent investor concerns about AI-driven disruption in the services sector, benefiting majors like HCL Technologies and Tech Mahindra.

Metal stocks also showed significant strength, with the Nifty Metal index rising 2.7%. Hindalco and Tata Steel were among the primary beneficiaries of this sectoral momentum. Additionally, the auto and pharma indices each gained 1.85%, providing further support to the benchmark.

Despite the strong start, the Nifty 50 erased nearly 170 points from its intraday high of 25,653. This retreat was primarily caused by profit booking and selling pressure in heavyweights. Reliance Industries, Adani Ports, and State Bank of India (SBI) emerged as the biggest drags, with the PSU Bank and Oil & Gas sectors ending the day in the red. This cautiousness at higher levels resulted in the index closing with only a modest gain for the day.
