How it's calculated

Yearly: balance = (balance + annual deposit) × (1 + 7.1%). Deposits made before the 5th of a month earn that month's interest; depositing the full amount in early April maximises returns.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current PPF interest rate?

7.1% per annum for the July–September 2026 quarter (Q2 FY 2026-27) — the government kept all small-savings rates unchanged for the ninth consecutive quarter. The rate is reviewed quarterly.

Is PPF really tax-free?

Yes — deposits qualify for 80C (old regime), and both interest and maturity are fully tax-exempt. That makes 7.1% tax-free equivalent to ~10.2% pre-tax for someone in the 30% slab.

Can I withdraw before 15 years?

Partial withdrawals are allowed from year 7, loans from year 3, and premature closure after 5 years in specific cases (with a 1% rate penalty).
