India Outward FDI Commitments Rise 23.3% to USD 3.84 Billion in August on Surge in Guarantees

India’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) commitments climbed 23.3% year-on-year to $3.84 billion in August 2026, compared to $3.11 billion in August 2025, according to provisional data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Sequentially, outbound financial commitments witnessed a moderation, falling from $5.78 billion recorded in July 2026. Total OFDI commitments encompass three primary channels: corporate guarantees, equity investments, and loans extended by Indian parent entities to their foreign subsidiaries and joint ventures.

Breakdown of Outbound Commitments

The annual expansion in August was predominantly powered by corporate guarantees, which rose significantly compared to the prior-year period:

  • Guarantees: Guarantees issued for overseas units expanded over 85% year-on-year to $2.235 billion ($2.24 billion), compared to $1.206 billion in August 2025. However, the figure retreated from the $2.84 billion logged in July 2026.
  • Equity Investments: Equity commitments rose moderately by over 7% to $1.14 billion ($1,140.52 million) from $1.063 billion in August 2025, though falling sequentially from $2.056 billion in July 2026.
  • Loans: Debt commitments contracted by roughly 45% year-on-year to $464.24 million, down from $845.31 million in August 2025 and $878.93 million in July 2026.

Key Corporate Commitments in August

Several leading Indian corporations made substantial capital and guarantee commitments to scale operations across energy, telecommunications, infrastructure, and technology sectors:

Top Corporate Transactions:

  • Solar Industries India: Issued the month's largest guarantee of $795 million for its wholly owned subsidiary, Solar Overseas Mauritius Ltd.
  • Jindal Power: Committed $514 million in guarantees along with $7.4 million in debt for its Mauritius-based wholly owned subsidiary.
  • Tata Communications: Backed its wholly owned subsidiary in the Netherlands with guarantees worth $288.75 million.
  • Bharat PetroResources: Committed $250 million in equity alongside $154.5 million in guarantees for its Netherlands unit.
  • KEC International: Extended $81.7 million in guarantees to support its joint venture in Saudi Arabia.
  • Nazara Technologies: Pledged $33.8 million in equity and $57.4 million in debt for its United Kingdom subsidiary.
  • Sindhu Trade Links: Executed an equity investment of $72.39 million into Singapore-based Advent Coal Resources.

Implications for Indian Markets

The robust double-digit yearly uptick in outward direct investment highlights the growing appetite of domestic firms to expand their global footprints and secure international supply chains, markets, and strategic technology assets.

While the sequential dip reflects month-to-month lumpiness inherent in large cross-border corporate deals, the heavy proportion of parent guarantees indicates Indian enterprises are actively leveraging their balance sheet strength to facilitate credit access for offshore operational entities. The RBI noted that these figures are compiled based on online reporting from authorized dealer banks under both automatic and approval routes and remain provisional.
