India’s passenger vehicle retail registrations witnessed sharp year-on-year growth in September 2026, propelled by strong consumer demand and festive stocking. According to Vahan retail registration data compiled by industry tracker Autopunditz, passenger vehicle registrations reached 4,20,359 units in September 2026.
This represents a 31.8% year-on-year surge compared to the 3,18,907 units registered in September 2025, adding over 1.01 lakh incremental vehicle registrations in a single month. On a sequential basis, retail volumes expanded 2.6% month-on-month compared to August 2026, when registrations stood at 4,09,528 units.
Key OEM Highlights and Market Share Dynamics
The September numbers showed broad-based growth across several major manufacturers, with market shares shifting notably across the top spots:
- Maruti Suzuki India: The country's largest automaker retained a commanding lead, recording 1,69,826 retail registrations and capturing a 40.4% market share.
- Mahindra & Mahindra: Mahindra secured the second position overall with 57,817 registrations, lifting its market share to 13.8%.
- Tata Motors: Tata Motors slipped to third place with 56,156 units, registering a 3.3% decline on a sequential month-on-month basis.
- Hyundai Motor India: Hyundai surpassed the 50,000-unit threshold in retail registrations, posting a strong 31.5% year-on-year growth.
- Kia India: Kia delivered an impressive 45.9% year-on-year growth in registrations, capturing an additional 0.6 percentage points in retail market share.
Outside the top four, brands such as Nissan and VinFast also recorded substantial year-on-year growth during the month.
Festive Demand and Retail Health
The retail performance is particularly significant for auto analysts and equity investors because Vahan data reflects actual on-ground deliveries to end consumers, contrasting with factory wholesale dispatches.
A low statistical base from September 2025—which had been dampened by the timing of inauspicious calendar periods—coupled with early festive season purchases contributed to the strong rebound. With total retail registrations firmly crossing the 4.20 lakh mark, auto dealerships enter the peak Diwali and Navratri retail weeks with robust underlying sales momentum.
