India Passenger Vehicle Retail Sales Surge 32.1% in September 2026 to 4.27 Lakh Units as Mahindra Edges Out Tata Motors

Passenger vehicle retail sales in India crossed the four-lakh milestone in September 2026, reaching 4,27,213 units. The performance represents a 32.10% year-on-year surge compared to the 3,23,391 units registered in September 2025, as well as a sequential improvement of 6.17% from 4,02,398 units in August 2026, according to registration figures compiled by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

The overall automotive sector recorded an all-time monthly high of 25,36,920 retail registrations across segments, marking a 31.82% year-on-year expansion. FADA noted, however, that annual comparisons were magnified by a distorted base in September 2025, when buyers delayed showroom deliveries ahead of key tax transitions. On a year-to-date basis, cumulative passenger vehicle retail sales reached 25,44,187 units, advancing 24.48% over the 20,43,813 units logged during the corresponding period of the previous year. Both urban and rural channels expanded in parallel, rising 32.11% and 32.09% year-on-year, respectively.

OEM-Wise Passenger Vehicle Retail Performance:

  • Maruti Suzuki India: Retained its position at the top of the chart by delivering 1,69,132 units. The carmaker commanded a 39.59% market share and registered sequential expansion over its August tally of 1,67,200 units.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra: Secured the second spot after retailing 57,343 units, edging ahead of Tata Motors in a fierce battle for runner-up honors.
  • Tata Motors: Slipped to third place by a margin of 89 vehicles, registering 57,254 units. The company's passenger vehicle market share eased to 13.40% compared to 13.76% in September 2025.
  • Hyundai Motor India: Finished in fourth place with 50,201 units, improving significantly from the 38,187 units registered in the same month of the previous year.
  • Toyota Kirloskar Motor: Recorded retail sales of 28,050 units, securing a 6.57% share of the domestic car market.
  • Kia India: Logged 26,663 registrations, growing from 18,274 units in September 2025 and lifting its market share to 6.24%.
  • Skoda Auto Volkswagen India: Delivered 8,479 units, holding a 1.98% market share compared to 2.31% a year ago.
  • JSW MG Motor India: Retained positive retail momentum with 6,475 units, up from 5,698 units, accounting for a 1.52% market share.
  • Honda Cars India: Registered 5,283 units, up from 3,707 units in September 2025.
  • Other Carmakers: Stellantis Group (Jeep and Citroën) recorded 1,076 units, while BYD posted 836 units and Jaguar registered 581 units.

Changing Powertrain Dynamics:

Powertrain diversification continued to influence showroom footfalls during the month. Traditional petrol and ethanol blends remained the primary fuel type, capturing a 41.27% share of total passenger vehicle sales.

Alternative fuels continued to gain traction:

  • CNG and LPG: Accounted for 23.11% of the passenger vehicle market.
  • Diesel: Stood at 17.74% of monthly retail deliveries.
  • Strong Hybrids: Captured a 9.44% share of domestic passenger car registrations.
  • Electric Vehicles (EVs): Expanded penetration to 8.45% of total retail volumes.

For investors tracking the Indian auto sector, strong retail absorption heading into the peak festive calendar offers operational relief to dealership networks after inventory buildups earlier in the cycle. Sustained demand across utility vehicles and electrified powertrains will remain key drivers of revenue momentum for major listed original equipment manufacturers.
