The Indian rupee appreciated by 20 paise to trade at 94.79 against the US dollar in early deals on Friday, tracking weakness in the greenback and benefiting from the ongoing impact of regulatory foreign exchange measures initiated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the domestic unit opened on a firm footing at 94.75 before touching 94.79, logging a 20-paise gain over its previous close. On Thursday, the local currency had risen 18 paise to end the session at 94.99 against the American currency.
Macro Drivers Behind the Rupee's Rebound
The currency's upward trajectory was supported by a retreat in the US dollar index, lower US Treasury yields, and the Reserve Bank of India's active administrative and liquidity steps in the currency market. The central bank recently instituted targeted measures to curb speculative dollar demand, including a dedicated foreign exchange window for state-run oil marketing companies to shift bulk dollar purchases away from the spot market, tighter requirements on derivative exposures, and enhanced reserve conditions for large dollar transactions.
The dollar index, which gauges the greenback against a basket of six major global peers, fell 0.54 per cent to 102, lending breathing room to emerging market currencies.
"Decline in dollar index and softening of US treasury yields also supported the rupee. However, a surge in crude oil prices capped sharp gains. On the data front, US PPI (Producer Price Index) was hotter than expected while retail sales topped forecast. Weekly unemployment claims were in line with expectations," noted Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan.
External Headwinds and Equity Pressures
Despite the positive momentum, sharper advances in the domestic unit were restrained by elevated global energy prices and capital outflows from Indian financial markets.
Brent crude, the international benchmark, traded 0.54 per cent lower at USD 105.35 per barrel in futures trade but stayed at structurally high levels, posing ongoing current account challenges for India's import-heavy economy.
Domestic benchmark equity indices also experienced subdued early trading before attempting a recovery:
- The BSE Sensex initially dropped 113 points to 74,187 before recovering later in the day.
- The NSE Nifty 50 declined 27.20 points in early deals to 22,967.15.
- Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained consistent sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 5,285.37 crore on a net basis on Thursday, according to exchange figures.
Market Outlook for Indian Investors
The central bank's timely intervention and derivative curbs have curbed extreme speculative volatility in the USD/INR currency pair over recent sessions. For domestic equity and debt investors, a stabilized exchange rate acts as a buffer against imported inflationary pressures, particularly when crude oil remains elevated above the USD 100 mark. Market participants will track upcoming global macroeconomic readings and foreign fund flow trajectories to evaluate whether the rupee can sustain its recovery beneath the key psychological levels.
