Jio Platforms Rs 30,213 Crore IPO Closes With Over 1 Crore Applications as Allotment Odds Emerge

The subscription window for India’s largest-ever initial public offering (IPO), the Rs 30,213 crore fresh issue of Jio Platforms Limited, officially drew to a close on Friday, October 23. Bidding data revealed unprecedented market interest, with the issue being oversubscribed 22.19 times overall and attracting bids nearing Rs 5 lakh crore at the upper end of the price band.

The digital and telecom flagship of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) also created market history by becoming the world’s first public issue to amass over 1 crore (10 million) investor applications, surpassing the previous domestic record held by Waaree Energies.

Tentative Allotment Matrix and Investor Odds

Following the final subscription tallies, tentative basis of allotment projections show the likelihood of share allocation across different investor categories ahead of the official finalisation on Monday, October 26:

  • Retail Individual Investors (RII): The retail quota, which was subscribed 2.72 times, offers favorable odds. Approximately 10 out of every 14 applicants (around 71.42%) are projected to receive the base lot of 12 equity shares.
  • Small Non-Institutional Investors (sHNI): For non-institutional investors applying in the Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh bracket, approximately 1 out of every 8.8 applicants (an odds ratio of 11.36%) will be allotted 180 shares.
  • Big Non-Institutional Investors (bHNI): For high-net-worth investors bidding above Rs 10 lakh, roughly 1 out of every 2.7 applicants (around 37%) is expected to receive an allotment of 180 shares.
  • Shareholders Quota: In the reserved category for eligible RIL equity holders, which saw heavy oversubscription of roughly 7.60 times, allotment will be proportionate. Investors who bid for the maximum permissible 168 shares are confirmed to receive a minimum of 22 shares, with actual allotment numbers potentially edging higher depending on application rejections.

Broad Institutional and Segment Breakdown

Institutional appetite provided the strongest momentum over the three-day bidding period. The Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIB) portion was oversubscribed 70.55 times, driven by intense demand from mutual funds, foreign portfolio investors, and domestic financial institutions. Non-Institutional Investors (NII) subscribed their allocation roughly 14 times.

Ahead of the public opening on October 21, Jio Platforms had already anchored Rs 8,110 crore from 212 anchor investors at the cap price of Rs 1,119 per share, with the anchor book generating bids exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh crore.

Issue Mechanics and Capital Allocation

The public offer was priced in the band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share with a minimum bid lot of 12 shares, requiring a base investment of Rs 13,428 per retail lot. Unlike previous mega issues such as Hyundai Motor India’s Rs 27,870 crore offering or LIC’s Rs 20,557 crore issue—both of which were pure offers for sale (OFS)—the Jio Platforms IPO consists entirely of 27 crore fresh equity shares.

At the upper price band of Rs 1,119 per share, the company commands a post-issue market capitalisation of approximately Rs 10.3 lakh crore (around $108 billion). From the net proceeds, the company has earmarked up to Rs 27,500 crore to prepay or repay outstanding borrowings of its primary operating entity, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, with the residual capital deployed towards general corporate operations and technology infrastructure.

Next Steps on the IPO Calendar

Registrar Kfin Technologies Limited and lead managers are scheduled to finalize the basis of allotment on Monday, October 26.

Unblocking of funds under ASBA and UPI mandates, alongside initial refunds, will take place on Tuesday, October 27, with shares concurrently credited to successful bidders' demat accounts. Jio Platforms is scheduled to make its trading debut on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE on Wednesday, October 28.
