Jio Platforms IPO Closes With 22.19x Subscription and Record 1.39 Crore Applications Ahead of October 28 Listing
Jio Platforms Limited has rewritten primary market history with its ₹30,213 crore initial public offering (IPO), logging a reported world record of nearly 1.39 crore investor applications and closing with an overall subscription of 22.19 times. Total demand across the public book and the anchor investor tranche surpassed ₹7.4 lakh crore (~$77 billion), making it the most heavily bid public offering in Indian capital market history.
The mega issue, which eclipsed Hyundai Motor India’s ₹27,870 crore issue from 2024 to become the largest-ever IPO in India, witnessed bids for 438.3 crore equity shares against the 19.75 crore shares available for public subscription. Bids from the public portion alone crossed ₹4.9 lakh crore, excluding the anchor book.
Category-Wise Demand Breakdown
Institutional bidding served as the anchor engine of the issue's oversubscription, though participation across other investor tranches remained robust:
- Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs): The institutional quota was subscribed a massive 70.55 times, receiving bids for 345.8 crore shares against 4.9 crore shares reserved.
- Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs): High-net-worth and corporate bidders subscribed their portion 14 times.
- Retail Individual Investors (RIIs): The retail quota was subscribed 2.72 times, with cumulative retail demand exceeding ₹25,867 crore.
- Shareholders and Employees: The Reliance Industries shareholder reservation category saw 7.60 times subscription, while the employee reservation portion was subscribed 2.93 times.
The 1.39 crore applications mark a roughly 43% jump over the previous Indian benchmark set by solar equipment manufacturer Waaree Energies in October 2024, which received 97.34 lakh applications.
Issue Structure and Valuation Metrics
The public issue was offered in a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share. At the upper price band, Jio Platforms is valued at approximately ₹10.30 lakh crore (around $108 billion).
Unlike कई large divestment-driven issues, the IPO consists entirely of a fresh issue of 27 crore shares, representing roughly 2.9% of the post-issue equity capital. Parent company Reliance Industries Limited and strategic stakeholders, including Meta and Alphabet, are not offloading any shares.
Out of the net proceeds of roughly ₹30,200 crore, the digital services behemoth has earmarked up to ₹27,500 crore to repay or prepay existing borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, significantly de-leveraging the core operating business and freeing cash flows for next-generation digital infrastructure, 5G monetization, and enterprise AI expansion.
Listing Timelines and Grey Market Buzz
Following the closure of bidding on Friday, October 23, the share allotment process is being finalised on Monday, October 26. Successful applicants will see shares credited to their demat accounts by Tuesday, October 27, alongside the initiation of refunds for non-allottees.
The stock is scheduled to debut on both the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Wednesday, October 28. In unofficial grey market activity ahead of listing, Jio Platforms shares were commanding a grey market premium (GMP) in the range of ₹245 to ₹255 per share, pointing toward an indicative listing gain of around 22% to 23% over the final issue price of ₹1,119.
