Sensex and Nifty End Flat While Nifty Media Jumps 3.66% and Smallcaps Surge 2.7%
Benchmark equity indices ended on a muted note on Tuesday following a range-bound and volatile trading session, as caution ahead of key global macroeconomic events neutralized buying interest in broader market counters.
The 30-share BSE Sensex edged lower by 8.08 points, or 0.01%, to finish at 73,598.67, having moved between an intraday high of 73,762.98 and a low of 73,210.76. Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 closed down 3.45 points, or 0.02%, at 22,749.75, fluctuating within a range of 22,829.75 and 22,653.20 during the session.
Broader Markets Outperform
In sharp contrast to the headline indices, broader markets witnessed strong buying momentum. The Nifty Smallcap index rallied 2.7%, while the Nifty Midcap index rose between 0.8% and 1%, driven by post-earnings reactions and strong selective domestic demand. Market breadth remained firmly positive, with advancing shares heavily outnumbering decliners on the National Stock Exchange.
Sectoral Trends
Sectoral performance was largely tilted in favor of the bulls, with 10 of the 15 major sector gauges compiled by the NSE ending in the green.
Top Gaining Sectors:
- Nifty Media: Emerged as the standout performer of the session, jumping 3.66% on the back of sharp advances across key broadcast and entertainment constituents.
- Nifty Realty: Advanced nearly 2% (1.94%), supported by steady property demand cues.
- Nifty Pharma: Rose 1.72% to 1.9%, buoyed by strong quarterly earnings announcements.
- Nifty Auto: Added 1.20%, aided by buying interest in passenger vehicle makers.
Laggards of the Day:
- Nifty IT: Dropped between 0.26% and 0.81%, dragged down by profit booking in bellwethers ahead of major US big-tech earnings.
- Nifty Private Bank: Shed 0.39% to 0.73%, putting downside pressure on the Bank Nifty index, which ended down 391.80 points at 53,974.90.
- Nifty FMCG: Slipped 0.42% during the session.
Movers and Shakers
Among individual stocks, Tata Consumer Products surged 6.8% following better-than-expected second-quarter financial results driven by robust operating performance. Bharti Airtel gained 3.18%, while Trent rose 2.40% and Maruti Suzuki advanced 2.28%. Bajaj Auto and Power Grid Corporation also featured among the top large-cap gainers.
On the losing side, frontline IT and heavyweight counters faced selling pressure. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, ITC, Cipla, and Coal India ended as the primary drags on the headline indices.
Expert View and Global Factors
Market analysts noted that elevated crude oil prices and foreign portfolio outflows continued to cap gains for the frontline benchmarks. Brent crude remained near six-month highs above $115 per barrel amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, stoking concerns regarding domestic inflation and corporate margins.
Investors also exercised caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy announcement, where central bankers are anticipated to maintain interest rates while providing cues on upcoming policy actions. Domestic institutional inflows and resilient corporate earnings across mid- and small-cap companies provided a vital cushion against broader market declines.
