Sensex Climbs Over 600 Points and Nifty Tops 22,800 as FMCG and PSU Bank Stocks Rally
Indian equity benchmark indices staged a sharp comeback during Thursday's trading session, shaking off recent rangebound movement as bulls took command of Dalal Street. The BSE Sensex jumped over 600 points, or 0.82 percent, to touch an intraday high around 73,847, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced past the critical 22,800 hurdle to trade near 22,863.
A sharp contraction in market nervousness accompanied the rally, with the volatility index, India VIX, sliding roughly 5 percent. The slump in volatility encouraged broad-based buying across large-cap and banking heavyweights, giving momentum to index futures and cash market positions.
Key Drivers Behind the Dalal Street Surge
Several domestic and global factors supported Thursday's upward trajectory:
- Cooling Volatility: The sharp retreat in India VIX provided comfort to derivative traders, fostering aggressive short-covering at lower levels after recent sessions of consolidation.
- Global Monetary Stability: Market sentiment gained traction following policy continuity from the US Federal Reserve, where interest rates were held steady as expected, removing an immediate layer of global macro uncertainty.
- Resilient Broader Breadth: Advance-decline metrics on the National Stock Exchange remained decisively in favor of buyers, with advancing shares substantially outnumbering decliners.
Sectoral Performance
Public sector banking counters and non-durable consumer goods led the intraday charge, with both indices clocking strong gains.
Top Performing Pockets:
- Nifty PSU Bank: State-run lenders attracted sustained accumulation, snapping their brief consolidation phase to lead sectoral gains on Dalal Street.
- Nifty FMCG: Consumer staples majors, including ITC and Hindustan Unilever, witnessed defensive and value buying to support index heavyweights.
- Realty and IT: Real estate developers and selective information technology firms followed suit, extending support to the benchmark's advance.
Among prominent gainers on the frontline indices, stocks such as Adani Ports, Power Grid Corporation, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Reliance Industries, NTPC, and Titan gained between 1 percent and 3 percent. Bucking the trend, select retail and auto stocks, including Trent, traded in the red.
Technical Outlook for Nifty 50
Technical analysts noted that the decisive reclaim of the 22,800 mark opens room for an extended relief move towards 23,050–23,200 in the coming sessions. On the downside, market watchers highlighted that the 22,660–22,500 zone will now serve as a crucial trailing support cushion for traders maintaining long positions against potential expiry-day fluctuations.
