RBI Fixes Premature Redemption Price of SGB 2019-20 Series VI at Rs 14,213 Per Unit
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the premature redemption price for the Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2019-20 Series VI tranche at Rs 14,213 per unit, with the redemption date falling on Friday, October 30, 2026.
The tranche, originally issued on October 30, 2019, has completed its mandatory five-year lock-in period, enabling eligible bondholders to exercise early exit options on designated interest payment dates.
Benchmark Pricing and Valuation Methodology
In accordance with Government of India notifications governing the Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption of gold bonds is permitted after the fifth year from the date of issue on dates when interest is payable.
The redemption price is benchmarked against the simple average closing price of 999-purity gold published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA) over the preceding three working days. For this tranche, the RBI determined the value based on market closing rates across October 27, October 28, and October 29, 2026.
Windfall Gains for Long-Term Investors
When the SGB 2019-20 Series VI was launched in late October 2019, the Ministry of Finance set the nominal issue price at Rs 3,835 per gram, offering a Rs 50 per gram discount to investors who applied online and paid through digital modes, bringing the net entry price to Rs 3,785 per gram.
At the declared redemption price of Rs 14,213 per unit:
- Digital Subscribers: Realise an absolute capital appreciation of Rs 10,428 per gram, translating to a nominal capital gain of approximately 275.5%.
- Offline Subscribers: Register a gain of Rs 10,378 per gram, reflecting a return of over 270.6%.
- Portfolio Example: An initial investment of Rs 1 lakh made by an online subscriber in October 2019 is now valued at approximately Rs 3.75 lakh upon premature redemption.
These figures reflect pure capital appreciation and do not include the fixed 2.50% annual interest paid semi-annually on the original nominal value throughout the holding period.
Eligibility and Tax Implications
Under the SGB framework, eligible holders comprise resident individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), trusts, universities, and charitable institutions.
For Indian retail investors, one of the most compelling advantages of Sovereign Gold Bonds remains their tax efficiency. Under Section 47 of the Income Tax Act, capital gains arising from the redemption of SGBs directly through the RBI's redemption window—whether prematurely after five years or upon final eight-year maturity—are fully exempt from capital gains tax for individuals. In contrast, interest earned at 2.50% per annum remains taxable as income from other sources at the investor's applicable income tax slab rate.
Bondholders who choose not to tender their holdings in this premature exit window will continue to receive semi-annual interest until the next permissible redemption cycle or until the final maturity of the tranche on October 30, 2027.
