NSEIX Extends GIFT Nifty Trading to 23.5 Hours in Push for Round-the-Clock Global Access
The NSE International Exchange (NSEIX), based in Gujarat’s GIFT City, has extended its daily trading window to 23 hours and 30 minutes, transitioning the bourse into a near round-the-clock trading platform. The new schedule came into effect on November 2, 2026, marking a significant milestone in India's efforts to integrate domestic derivatives with global financial markets.
Under the revised framework, the exchange operates from 3:15 AM IST through 2:45 AM IST the following day, spanning the entirety of Asian, European, and US trading sessions. Previously, the exchange had been operational for roughly 21 hours daily.
Revised Timings for GIFT Nifty
For market participants tracking the benchmark NSE IFSC Nifty 50 Index Futures—widely known as GIFT Nifty—the morning session now commences an hour and fifteen minutes earlier than before:
- Morning Pre-Open Session: 5:00 AM IST
- Morning Normal Trading: 5:15 AM IST to 3:40 PM IST (advanced from the previous 6:30 AM IST open)
- Pre-Close Window: 3:40 PM IST to 3:55 PM IST
- Evening Pre-Open Session: 3:58 PM IST
- Evening Normal Trading: 4:05 PM IST to 2:45 AM IST the following day
The shift allows domestic market participants and international institutional investors to assess market sentiment across early Asian bourses—such as Tokyo, Seoul, and Sydney—well before regular trading opens on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE at 9:15 AM IST. GIFT Nifty serves as the premier benchmark for predicting the opening trajectory of the domestic Indian equity market.
Technology and Infrastructure Upgrades
Operating nearly 24/5 required major architectural upgrades to NSEIX's clearance and matching engines. The exchange noted that its technology infrastructure supports rapid settlements and data synchronization, carrying out system maintenance and routine updates within three minutes between sessions and taking under 15 minutes at the conclusion of the trading day.
V. Balasubramaniam, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NSEIX, highlighted that moving to a 23.5-hour cycle is an essential step in positioning GIFT City as a globally accessible marketplace. The broader access allows foreign institutional investors (FIIs) and non-resident participants to seamlessly hedge currency and index exposures without friction caused by regional market closures.
Regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), NSEIX was established in June 2017. The exchange's extended schedule solidifies its positioning against global offshore trading hubs like Singapore and Dubai, repatriating liquidity into India’s flagship international financial center.
