NLC India Shares Surge 8% as Q2 Net Profit Jumps 83% and Board Clears Green Arm IPO OFS
Shares of state-owned Navratna utility major NLC India Limited surged up to 8% in trading on Dalal Street after the company delivered a robust operational report for the second quarter (Q2 FY27) and paved the way for the public listing of its green energy arm.
The mining-to-power public sector undertaking (PSU) reported an 83.2% year-on-year jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,328.01 crore for the July–September quarter, compared to Rs 724.80 crore recorded in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year. Consolidated revenue from operations also strengthened to Rs 4,732.35 crore during the quarter.
Unlocking Value via Renewables IPO
The key market catalyst was the board's formal clearance for an Offer for Sale (OFS) of up to 10 crore equity shares in its wholly-owned clean energy subsidiary, NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL).
The decision is part of NLC India's broader roadmap to monetize its expanding green asset portfolio through an Initial Public Offering (IPO) and subsequent listing on Indian stock exchanges. By spinning out NIRL, the PSU aims to provide market visibility to its renewable energy projects, raise growth capital, and unlock value for its parent company shareholders.
Capacity Additions and Capital Raising
Alongside the earnings and IPO roadmap, the board of directors approved key expansion and financing proposals:
Key Board Approvals:
- Interim Dividend: The board declared an interim dividend of Rs 1.50 per equity share, setting November 12, 2026, as the record date for determining eligible shareholders.
- Thermal Power Expansion: In-principle approval was granted for setting up an additional 660 MW thermal power unit at the Ghatampur Thermal Power Station to reinforce baseload generation capacity.
- Bond Issuance: The company sanctioned a proposal to raise up to Rs 2,500 crore via the issuance of non-convertible debentures/bonds to support ongoing capital expenditure plans.
Market Impact and Outlook
The results reflect strong execution across NLC India’s traditional mining operations and power generation assets. Energy and PSU counters have garnered elevated institutional interest as India’s rising peak power demand sustains plant load factors for state-run power generators.
For retail and institutional investors, the planned public debut of NLC India Renewables mirrors successful clean energy value-unlocking plays seen across other central public sector enterprises, establishing NLC India as a diversified player straddling both conventional lignite-thermal generation and green transition assets.
