Flair Writing Q2 Net Profit Drops 26% to ₹31.7 Crore as Plant Floods and Cost Inflation Dent Margins
Mumbai: Pen manufacturer Flair Writing Industries Limited (NSE: FLAIR, BSE: 544030) reported a 25.8% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to ₹31.7 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, down from ₹42.7 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
The profit contraction occurred despite top-line expansion, as consolidated revenue from operations rose 6.0% year-on-year to ₹340.1 crore, compared with ₹320.9 crore in Q2 of the prior year. On a sequential basis, revenue rose 6.5% from ₹319.2 crore in Q1, while profit after tax (PAT) rebounded by 9.1% from ₹29.1 crore.
Operational Disruptions Squeeze Operating Margins
Earnings were weighed down by temporary operational shutdowns and raw material inflation. Operating EBITDA fell 16.2% year-on-year to ₹50.6 crore from ₹60.4 crore, leading to an EBITDA margin contraction of nearly 390 basis points to 14.9% from 18.8%. Sequentially, operating margins dropped from 16.7% in Q1.
Management noted that severe weather events, power outages, and localized flooding halted operations at its Valsad facility for approximately 15 days and at its Daman plant for seven days. These disruptions disproportionately impacted the company's newer categories—including creative products, houseware, and steel bottles—shaving off approximately ₹25 crore in potential revenue during the quarter.
Key Second-Quarter Financial Highlights:
- Consolidated Revenue: ₹340.1 crore, up 6.0% YoY and 6.5% QoQ.
- Consolidated Net Profit (PAT): ₹31.7 crore, down 25.8% YoY and up 9.1% QoQ.
- Operating EBITDA: ₹50.6 crore, declining 16.2% YoY from ₹60.4 crore.

Segment Performance and Full-Year Guidance
Despite external disruptions, domestic sales remained resilient, rising 6% sequentially to ₹292 crore from ₹276 crore in Q1. For the first half of the fiscal year, domestic sales grew 11% year-on-year to ₹568 crore. Export revenue gained 13% quarter-on-quarter to ₹49 crore, despite continuing freight and geopolitical headwinds in West Asia.
The core writing instruments category—which accounts for 68% of overall company revenue—grew 5% sequentially to ₹231 crore. Flair continues to hold over 18% market share in India's domestic writing instruments market.
Following the plant disruptions and margin pressure, company leadership revised its full-year revenue growth guidance downward to 12% or higher, from an earlier target of 15%. However, management maintained its medium-term compound growth outlook of approximately 15%, citing ongoing capacity expansion in creative products and an upcoming steel-bottle manufacturing line expected to go live in the fourth quarter.
Market Reaction
Shares of Flair Writing Industries traded lower following the earnings disclosure, falling over 2% to around ₹235 on the National Stock Exchange. The stock trades well off its 52-week peak of ₹345 as Dalal Street digested the guidance reduction and ongoing input cost pressures. Analysts are reviewing their medium-term earnings forecasts to factor in the lower operational leverage and second-half recovery expectations.
