Sensex Soars 1,254 Points and Nifty Crosses 24,300 as Crude Oil Tumbles
Indian equity markets witnessed an explosive start on Thursday morning, with benchmark indices surging sharply amid an easing geopolitical backdrop and sliding international crude oil prices.
The 30-share BSE Sensex leaped 1,254.34 points, or 1.62 per cent, to trade at 78,555.74 in initial deals. Concurrently, the broader NSE Nifty 50 climbed 353.45 points, or 1.48 per cent, to reach 24,314.25.
Key Catalysts Behind the Morning Rally
Crude Oil Retreat: The rally was largely anchored by a swift correction in global crude oil benchmarks on growing optimism over potential de-escalation in Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions. Because India imports over 85 per cent of its crude oil requirements, softening prices directly alleviate trade deficit concerns, curb imported inflation, and enhance operating margins for key consumer, aviation, and manufacturing sectors.
Sustained FII Inflows: Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have turned net buyers in Indian equities over recent sessions, shifting their stance and giving institutional support to index heavyweights.
Currency and Macro Landscape
In the currency market, the Indian rupee opened at 94.36 against the US dollar before slipping 9 paise to trade around 94.55. Forex dealers noted that while a broad-based strengthening of the US dollar weighed on the local unit, strong domestic equity momentum and lower crude import bills cushioned deeper losses for the currency.
Sectoral Impact
The sharp pullback in crude oil prices spurred broad-based buying across rate-sensitive and oil-dependent sectors:
- Oil marketing companies, paint manufacturers, and aviation stocks gained on prospects of reduced input and jet fuel costs.
- Banking and financial heavyweights supported the index upside, buoyed by the prospect of easing macroeconomic pressures.
- Automobile and infrastructure counters traded firmly in the green as foreign funds increased their exposure to domestic cyclicals.
Analysts noted that the combination of softening international oil prices and institutional inflows has altered short-term market momentum, providing a strong floor to domestic equities.
