Analysis: Reasons Behind the Moves

The Indian equity markets started Financial Year 2027 on a high note, with the Nifty 50 settling at 22,679.40. The primary catalyst for the rally was a significant improvement in global investor sentiment following remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who signaled that the conflict between the U.S. and Iran could reach a resolution within three weeks. This geopolitical de-escalation triggered a sharp decline in Brent crude oil prices, which slipped below the $100 per barrel mark.

Aviation and Defence Lead the Rally IndiGo emerged as the top gainer, surging 9.55% as the drop in crude oil prices directly improved the outlook for aviation turbine fuel costs, which had previously squeezed airline margins. The defence sector also saw robust buying interest, with the Nifty Defence index rising 5%. Bharat Electronics (BEL) gained 6.21% following reports of the company securing additional orders and announcing higher dividends.

Auto Sector Momentum Automotive stocks performed strongly as companies released their March 2026 sales data. Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 21% growth in total sales, contributing to a nearly 4% rise in the Nifty Auto index.

Profit Booking in Defensives In contrast, the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors were the sole laggards. As risk appetite returned to the market, investors rotated capital out of "defensive" plays like pharma and into high-growth sectors. Consequently, major healthcare stocks such as Dr Reddy's, Cipla, and Sun Pharma ended the day in the red despite the broader market surge.
