Investor Presentation
- Massive Rs 45,000 Cr capex plan through FY29 to address coverage parity and roll out 5G
- ARPU improved 8.3% YoY to Rs 190 in Q4FY26, showing positive tariff hike transmission
- Bank debt significantly reduced to Rs 726 Cr, lowering immediate default risk to commercial banks
- Focus on '17-5-5' strategy targeting high-value circles representing 99% of revenue
- Massive total debt of Rs 1,89,337 Cr (primarily regulatory dues to DoT and AGR liabilities)
- Continuous subscriber churn, losing 5.4 Mn users YoY down to 192.8 Mn
- Negative net worth of Rs -35,363 Cr and material uncertainty regarding going concern status
- Extremely high capital intensity requiring continuous dilution or government support to sustain operations
- Promoter holding is very low at 25.64%, well below the 35% threshold
- Material uncertainty related to going concern highlighted in statutory filings
1. Catalyst & Ramp-Aware Impact Math
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has announced a Rs 45,000 Cr capex roadmap through FY29 (approx. 3 years from the June 2026 as-of date). This represents ~1.01x its TTM revenue of Rs 44,763 Cr.
Spreading this Rs 45,000 Cr capex over 3 years implies an annual capex run-rate of Rs 15,000 Cr. This is not direct revenue; rather, it is capital deployment to arrest subscriber churn and upgrade 2G users to 4G/5G. - Year 1 Revenue Uplift: We model a modest 2% revenue uplift (Rs 895 Cr) in Year 1, as network rollouts take time to translate into stabilized subscriber numbers and higher ARPU. - Steady-State Revenue Uplift: By Year 3, if Vi successfully converts 2G users and stabilizes its base, we project a 12% cumulative revenue uplift (bringing annual revenue to ~Rs 50,134 Cr). - Earnings Impact: While management targets tripling Cash EBITDA, the massive depreciation on new capex and interest on the Rs 1,89,337 Cr debt will keep Net Profit under severe pressure. The Mar 2026 quarter net profit of Rs 51,970 Cr was distorted by a massive exceptional tax/regulatory credit or write-back (as operating profit was only Rs 4,889 Cr). Excluding this one-off, normalized EPS remains deeply negative, making a standard P/E-based re-rating highly speculative.
2. Industry Capital Intensity & Growth
- Capital Intensity: HIGH. Telecom requires continuous, multi-billion dollar investments in spectrum and network equipment just to maintain market share.
- Expected Industry CAGR: 8.0% driven by rising data consumption and periodic tariff hikes.
- Execution Difficulty: HIGH. Competing with deep-pocketed, low-debt players like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel makes customer acquisition and retention extremely expensive.
3. Multibagger Quality Assessment
- Financials: TTM Revenue is Rs 44,763 Cr, but Net Worth is deeply negative at Rs -35,363 Cr. ROCE is negative at -2.0%.
- Debt Profile: Total debt stands at a staggering Rs 1,89,337 Cr. Although bank debt was reduced to Rs 726 Cr, the government/regulatory debt remains an existential threat.
- Promoter Holding: Extremely low at 25.64%, which triggers our strict governance/risk cap.
4. Scenario Analysis (36-Month Horizon)
- Bull Case (+35%): Successful equity fundraise, government converts more debt to equity, ARPU rises to Rs 230+, and subscriber loss stops. Price reaches Rs 19.5.
- Base Case (+10%): Capex is executed slowly, subscriber loss slows down but does not stop, ARPU rises to Rs 210. Price hovers around Rs 16.
- Bear Case (-50%): Funding delays, continued aggressive subscriber poaching by competitors, and lack of further government relief. Price drops to Rs 7.2.
5. Verdict Rationale
Despite the large headline capex plan and positive ARPU movement, Vi remains a highly leveraged, structurally weak player in a capital-intensive industry. The low promoter holding (25.64%) and going-concern warnings cap our confidence and verdict. It is highly unlikely to deliver sustainable multibagger returns from this valuation base without massive, dilutive equity restructuring.
