How it's calculated
LTCG tax = max(0, gain − ₹1,25,000) × 12.5% × 1.04. STCG tax = gain × 20% × 1.04. Holding period > 12 months = long-term for listed equity/equity funds.
Frequently asked questions
What changed in capital gains tax recently?
From 23 July 2024: equity STCG rose from 15% to 20%, equity LTCG from 10% to 12.5%, and the LTCG exemption increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.25 lakh per year. Indexation was removed for most assets. These rates continue for FY 2026-27.
Is the ₹1.25 lakh exemption per transaction?
No — it is the aggregate long-term equity gain per financial year across all your sales. This calculator assumes the full exemption is available; reduce it if already used.
Does this apply to debt funds or property?
No — this calculator covers listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds (STT paid). Debt funds bought after April 2023 are taxed at slab rates; property has separate 12.5%-without-indexation rules.
