IT Sector Meltdown

The primary trigger for the market decline was a sharp sell-off in technology stocks. Industry heavyweight Infosys reported fourth-quarter results that failed to meet market expectations, accompanied by a cautious revenue growth outlook for the upcoming fiscal year. This sparked a broader contagion across the IT pack, with major players like TCS, Tech Mahindra, and HCL Technologies all registering losses of over 4%.

Geopolitical Tensions and Oil Prices

Global sentiment remained fragile due to escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. Reports of a continued naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz and the seizure of oil vessels led to fears of supply disruptions. Consequently, Brent crude prices surged above $105 per barrel. For an import-dependent economy like India, the spike in oil prices raised concerns regarding inflation and a widening current account deficit.

Macroeconomic Pressures

A weakening Indian Rupee, which slipped toward the 94.25 level against the US Dollar, further dampened the mood.
