Silver Slumps ₹6,678 per kg to ₹1.84 Lakh as Gold Falls to ₹1.41 Lakh Ahead of Festive Season
Domestic precious metals witnessed a notable downward correction on Friday, bringing cheer to Indian retail consumers and jewellery buyers ahead of the peak festive and wedding shopping season. According to data released by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), silver fell sharply by ₹6,678 per kilogram in a single day, settling at ₹1.84 lakh per kg compared to ₹1.90 lakh per kg recorded on Thursday.
Gold followed the downward trajectory, with 24-carat gold sliding by ₹1,364 to trade at ₹1.41 lakh per 10 grams.
Steep Monthly Retracement
The latest single-day drop marks the culmination of an aggressive monthly cool-off across domestic bullion markets throughout October.
Key Monthly Price Trends:
- Silver Correction: Silver has tumbled by ₹37,029 per kilogram over the past month, retreating from ₹2.20 lakh per kg recorded on October 1.
- Gold Decline: 24-carat gold has declined by ₹7,247 per 10 grams over the same period, coming off its October 1 level of ₹1.48 lakh per 10 grams.
- Single-Day Slide: Silver saw a drop of over 3.5% in Friday's session alone, moving from ₹1.90 lakh to ₹1.84 lakh per kg.
The pullback comes after precious metals experienced record-setting rallies earlier in the year, which had caused retail buyers to hesitate due to stretched household budgets.
Relief for Festive and Wedding Buyers
The timing of the price drop is significant for the Indian market. The auspicious period encompassing Dhanteras, Diwali, and the winter wedding calendar traditionally accounts for a major portion of India’s annual physical gold and silver consumption.
Over the past few months, elevated global prices, currency swings, and geopolitical friction had kept domestic rates elevated. The recent drop of over ₹37,000 in silver and more than ₹7,200 in gold within a month has created an entry window for consumers seeking physical jewellery, silverware, and bullion coins.
Regional Price Disparities
While IBJA provides national benchmark rates, retail showroom prices across India continue to reflect city-specific variances.
Factors Influencing Local Retail Rates:
- Logistics and Transit: Transporting physical gold and silver between state borders incurs additional freight, logistics, and transit insurance charges, resulting in slight premiums for cities farther from major import hubs.
- Local Associations: City- and state-level jewellers' associations determine daily card rates based on immediate local supply-and-demand dynamics and their own inventory acquisition costs.
- Volume Variations: High-volume markets, particularly in southern states, see substantial institutional procurement by large retail chains, though customer discounts vary depending on making charges and hallmarking fees.
Consumer Advisory
Market experts and consumer protection bodies advise buyers to insist on Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmarked jewellery with verifiable alphanumeric Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) codes. Shoppers are also advised to check prevailing daily rates across multiple transparent sources before finalizing their festive purchases.
