HPCL, IndiGo and Paint Stocks Surge as Brent Crude Stays Below $105 a Barrel
Shares of oil-sensitive sectors witnessed renewed buying interest across domestic bourses on Tuesday as international crude oil prices cooled from recent peaks and hovered below the $105-per-barrel mark. The softening price environment boosted investor appetite for downstream oil retailers, aviation players, paint manufacturers, and tyre makers on Dalal Street.
International benchmark Brent crude held below $105 per barrel, trading up a marginal 0.10% at $104.90 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude stood at $96.63 per barrel, higher by 0.18%. Crude prices have eased over successive sessions following diplomatic developments and geopolitical discussions aimed at averting broader supply disruptions.
OMCs Lead Dalal Street Gains
Downstream oil marketing companies (OMCs) saw significant traction, as lower crude prices directly ease procurement expenses and protect marketing and refining margins.
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) spearheaded the sectoral rally, climbing 3.5% to touch ₹360 in morning trade. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) also gained 2.3% to trade at ₹293. Conversely, state-run peer Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) witnessed profit-booking, slipping 2.9% to ₹138.
Meanwhile, upstream exploration and production companies faced headwinds from the lower price environment, with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Oil India sliding up to 2%.
Aviation and Consumer Sectors Advance
Aviation stocks rallied sharply on the prospect of lower fuel costs. Shares of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, surged over 4% to trade at ₹5,120. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) constitutes more than 40% of an airline's total operating expenses, making the aviation sector particularly responsive to swings in global crude prices.
Paint and tyre manufacturers, which rely heavily on petrochemical derivatives and crude-linked raw materials, also posted solid gains.
Performance of Leading Crude-Sensitive Stocks:
- InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo): Up 4.0% at ₹5,120
- Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL): Up 3.5% at ₹360
- Kansai Nerolac Paints: Up 2.8% at ₹185
- CEAT: Up 2.68% at ₹3,138
- Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL): Up 2.3% at ₹293
- Asian Paints: Up over 2.0% at ₹2,403
- Apollo Tyres: Gained over 2.0%
Macroeconomic Implications for India
Because India imports more than 85% of its crude oil requirements, persistent elevated oil prices exert pressure on the current account deficit, fiscal math, and the rupee. When crude consolidates below psychological thresholds like $105, it provides immediate breathing room for corporate operating margins and mitigates imported inflationary pressures across supply chains.
Market participants will continue tracking global supply dynamics and diplomatic developments to assess whether oil prices sustain their retreat or face fresh volatility.
