FIIs Net Buy ₹4,711 Crore in Index Futures in 4-Month Record Short-Covering Surge
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) unleashed an aggressive wave of short covering in the derivatives segment on Tuesday, net purchasing index futures worth ₹4,711.31 crore, according to National Stock Exchange (NSE) data. The single-day buying tally marks the highest purchase by overseas institutions in index futures in nearly four months, catalyzing a near-400-point rally on the benchmark Nifty 50.
The benchmark Nifty 50 index surged 370 points to close at 23,811 on Tuesday, buoyed by broad-based buying and fast-paced unwinding of short bets.
Key Highlights of Derivatives Positioning:
- Contract Volume: FIIs net bought a total of 30,442 index futures contracts during Tuesday's session, with Nifty futures accounting for the bulk at 28,587 contracts.
- Drop in Open Interest: Open interest (OI) held by FIIs in Nifty futures fell sharply by 13.3 per cent, sliding from 2.16 lakh contracts on the previous day to 1.87 lakh contracts.
- Cash Market Synergy: The short covering in futures was mirrored by robust cash market inflows, where FIIs stood as net buyers to the tune of ₹6,837 crore.
Shift in Derivatives Landscape
Derivatives analysts noted that the scale of short covering marks a critical turning point for market positioning in the November series.
Dharmesh Bhatt, Head of Derivatives Research at Systematix Institutional, observed that overseas funds covered index shorts in substantial size, shifting the November derivative series tone in favour of the bulls for the first time.
"FII short covering is reinforcing the bullish setup, while the November-series positioning has shifted meaningfully in favour of the bulls," said Bhatt. "The hedge stance is now at its lightest level in the series. The expiry roll also reduced both option books, with put longs declining more than put shorts, indicating a reduction in downside protection."
A Four-Month Record
The single-day net purchase of ₹4,711 crore is the largest recorded by FIIs in index futures since mid-July. According to historical NSE F&O data, overseas investors had net bought index futures worth ₹5,392.98 crore on July 17, as part of a three-day buying run totalling ₹7,828.04 crore between July 15 and July 17.
In the current leg, FIIs have accumulated index futures worth ₹5,824.47 crore across two consecutive trading sessions.
Implications for Indian Investors
For domestic participants, the simultaneous unwinding of index shorts and decline in put options indicates that foreign funds are stepping back from aggressively hedging against downside risks. A heavily short-skewed FII position had previously acted as an overhead supply zone for market bounces. With overseas investors reducing their net short overhang and adding to cash equities, domestic benchmarks enter the remainder of the week with reduced structural selling pressure and strengthened technical support around lower levels.
