Indian Passenger Vehicle Retail Sales Dip 14.2% in October 2026 to 5.08 Lakh Units as Festive Calendar Shifts
India's passenger vehicle (PV) retail registrations declined 14.23% year-on-year (YoY) in October 2026 to 5,07,768 units, compared to 5,92,032 units recorded in October 2025, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
Despite the annual contraction, volumes expanded 18.86% month-on-month (MoM) over the 4,27,213 units delivered in September 2026. FADA noted that October 2026 still marked the third-highest October on record for passenger vehicle retail sales. The year-on-year drop was largely driven by a calendar distortion: October 2025 captured the full tailwind of both Navratri and Diwali along with post-GST 2.0 rate cuts, whereas in 2026, key festive purchase dates like Dhanteras (November 6) and Diwali (November 8) shifted heavy delivery volumes into November.
OEM Performance and Market Share Dynamics
The competitive landscape saw shifts among major automakers as utility vehicles and fresh model portfolios anchored demand, even as entry-level passenger cars faced headwinds:
- Maruti Suzuki India: Retained its leadership position, delivering 2,11,996 units in October 2026. Retail sales fell 15.04% YoY from 2,49,521 units, bringing its market share slightly lower to 41.75% from 42.15%.
- Tata Motors: Reclaimed the number-two rank after briefly trailing Mahindra in the prior month, clocking 73,449 units. While volumes dropped 8.21% YoY from 80,020 units, Tata Motors expanded its market share to 14.47% from 13.52%.
- Mahindra & Mahindra: Ranked third with retail sales of 64,982 units, down 11.88% YoY from 73,739 units. However, robust demand for its SUV lineup helped lift its market share to 12.80% from 12.46%.
- Hyundai Motor India: Placed fourth with 58,099 units, down from 69,458 units in October 2025, with market share easing to 11.44%.
- Kia India: Retailed 30,799 units, declining 12.99% YoY from 35,397 units. Despite the decline, Kia surpassed Toyota to take the fifth spot with a 6.07% market share.
- Toyota Kirloskar Motor: Registered 28,727 units, down from 38,367 units in October 2025, bringing its market share to around 6.00%.
- Skoda Auto Volkswagen India: Delivered 9,150 units, down from 13,459 units a year earlier, with market share contracting to 1.80% from 2.27%.
Alternative Fuels and Market Trends
The shift in consumer fuel preferences continued to show structural changes. Petrol and ethanol powertrain vehicles commanded a 41.60% share of total retail sales, down from 48.96% in October 2025. In contrast, alternative powertrains—encompassing CNG, hybrid, and electric vehicles—collectively captured 41.83% of the passenger vehicle market. Total electric vehicle registrations across all vehicular categories reached approximately 3.55 lakh units during the month.
Among emerging manufacturers, VinFast Auto India posted rapid volume acceleration, delivering 2,571 units compared to 142 units in October 2025. JSW MG Motor India and Nissan Motor India also registered positive year-on-year retail growth.
What It Means for Indian Investors
For investors tracking Indian auto equities, the headline year-on-year drop in October retail numbers reflects calendar timing rather than deteriorating consumer demand. Passenger vehicle dealer inventories remained stable at 43 to 45 days, unchanged from September levels.
Furthermore, cumulative year-to-date retail volumes for the April–October 2026 period rose 16.14% YoY to 30,68,353 units (compared to 26,35,837 units in the prior-year period), pointing to sustained underlying demand. Market participants will look closely at November 2026 registration data to evaluate the combined festive performance across Dhanteras and Diwali to measure whether dealer channel destocking and retail conversion meet automaker targets.
