What is Relative volume?
Raw volume cannot be compared across stocks: 10 lakh shares is a quiet day for one stock and a frenzy for another. Relative volume fixes that by dividing today's volume by the stock's own 20-day average. An RVOL of 3 means three times the usual activity, whatever the stock. Volume confirms price: a breakout on high RVOL has real buyers behind it.
Formula
RVOL = today's volume ÷ average volume of the previous 20 sessions
Volume breakout (our screen) = close above the 20-day high AND RVOL ≥ 2
How to read it
- RVOL above 2 on a price rise suggests institutional participation.
- Very high RVOL with a small price change can be a large holder exiting or entering quietly. Check the delivery percentage.
- Volume dry-ups (RVOL well below 1) during a base often precede breakouts.
Common mistakes
- Reading high volume as bullish by itself. Volume on a down day is selling pressure.
